Yes, he's definitely Hlanganini. He is easily identified by the fact that the bottom part of his left earlobe is missing, which your photo clearly shows. Great pics, by the way! You were very fortunate to see him.

Thankyou. Yes when we came across him although we didnt know who he was, we knew it was a special sighting :) I also have a couple of minutes of video footage of him throwing sand over himself and generaly looking impressive, but its about 18mb and I think the dial-up'ers would lynch me ;)

I will be in the Kruger next week and I wanted to know if anyone had seen Mashagadzi recently in the Shingwedzi area?

Nico and Yvonne reported that he has not been seen lately. (see here).
I saw him on 20th May.

Richard was he alone? I saw one similar but he had an askari with him also at Letabe - fed just in front of the fence where that ramp down is. Will check the photos when I get home.

I think the New Tuskers project is a good innovation and the new exhibition of these giants at the Letaba Elephant museum is very interesting!
It adds new incentive to elephant sightings…

Great pic Arno, but what strange looking tusks. :roll:
That area is producing some nice big tuskers lately, as Baz saw Duke recently a bit further up at the hide and we saw some nice specimens there as well in June. :D

This is a picture of a tusker we took in December 2002 around Shingwedzi. It was taken with a very basic camera. I then took a still of the printed snap, so forgive the quality:
