the free tailed bat familey has the name "mollisodae" they are often reffered to as mastiff bats because of there wrinkled lips. the name molossus which is the greek word used for a type of dog used by the ancient greek. the bat i am going to talk about is the angola free tailed bat which is the most common bat in the kruger national park, these bats are the bats that inhabit the the letaba bat houses.

Angola free tailed Bat (Mops condylurus)

this bat is smaller than the midas free tailed and darker in couler. they have a white underbelly which is very promonint, their top half of their body is a medium brown couler. they have a crest on the top of their heads which they can raise, it is a brownish couler.

Habitat: found in a wide range of habitats/vegetation.

Habits: they are very gregarious and often roost in colonies of up to a 1000, they mostly roost in groups than houndreds or thousends.


Feeding: beetles, as they have strong jaws, they are high aerial feeders and fly above the canopy tops.


reproduction: this species has a gestation period of 85 days and one baby per birth, they give birth twice a year.


Day roost: they roost in the expantion joints of bridges, in roofs and under the bark of trees.


Call: their call is a low frequency Fm pich of 25khz their call ranges from 22-39khz


notes: when they roost in big groups they are renown for their pungent smells.
