Hi Ed! How are you? I hope you are your wife are both well and are arranging your next Kruger trip!
I remember that afternoon well … Heksie had gone to check out a leopard sighting (but ended up staring at rocks for 2+ hours) so wasn’t happy when I told her about my experience!!! I decided mid-afternoon that I’d take a run to down to Croc Bridge … there were a couple of cars on the H4-2 on my way to CB checking out a few lions in the bush. I looked and could see a couple of the females but they were really well camouflaged. The sky over Lower Sabie had become VERY grey and I thought I’d just quickly get some charcoal and Savannas at CB then make my way back to Lower Sabie as I’d left the windows open on my tent – it was SO hot when I’d left and there was no sign whatsoever that there would be rain.
I got my supplies at CB then headed back out onto the H4-2 to Lower Sabie. I got to where the lions were. By this time there were about half a dozen cars there – the lions were still in the bush and not a great sighting. The only thing on my mind was to get back to Lower Sabie before the heavens opened. I passed the cars which, at that time, were in a very orderly queue. I was out of everyone’s way and decided to stop to take a couple of photos for my Trip Report as the lions had moved slightly from when I’d been there about 20 minutes before and you could see them a little bit better …
This was my original view …
(that photo was taken at 4:26pm)
But as your video shows, that female got up (just after I’d taken my first photo) and started moving … before I knew it, I was surrounded by lions!
And as your video shows, they came and sat right in front of my car … (these photo were taken through my windscreen …)
I was absolutely loving it, but I must admit I was really anxious about the grey sky …
But it was obvious I was going nowhere fast and was definitely going to be late back to Lower Sabie …
(I think that is you in the silver car to the left …)
My last photo was taken at 5:50pm so that was almost an hour and a half I was “stuck” there!!!
It was despicable the way people behaved - I couldn’t believe it when cars drove through the bush to get to the front where the lions were and started beeping their horns – unbelievable!
PS – when I got back to Lower Sabie it looked like a river had been running through my tent!!!
