Wharthogs in ADDO June 2006
Note the "tears" from the eyes as pointed out by another forumite.

I love them: they are the only animals that pray before they eat.

They are toes. Also called "dew claws". Many mammals have them, especially the antelope, pig etc. types. They are actually toes that are not used. Many mammals walk on some of their toes and not on their feet. This is an adaption for speed.

Exceptions are mammals like your carnivores and primates.

(Short explanation for a long story! )

Why is it that we never see warthog at the Satara cam?

When in Addo a couple of weeks ago I noticed that a large percentage of the warthogs there were much lighter in colour than the rest and the ones in Kruger I'm used to.

When standing on the veranda of our chalet looking out over the park it was easy to pick them up as the appeared almost greyish.

Any explanation for this? I though it might be dust but as it was raining for a couple of days not much dust around and it would've washed off. The soil in the area has a reddish colour overall as well.
