This was my 1st sighting of Black Rhino in the Kruger , taken on 11/7/ 2009 on the s36 . A few weeks later and he was killed by Lions.

Why is this boy so thin? I was very sad on my recent visit that we didn't see a SINGLE Rhino (black or white). Went to Orpen & Satara, is this strange?

Spinnekop , He was very old , on his last legs so to speak ....

Not often nowadays that you hear of a Rhino dying of old age. Still sad but better than being killed for your horn.

My good fortune with black rhinos continues. During my just completed trip in November I was blessed with 2 sightings of this magnificent creature. One I was able to photograph and the second one scampered off before I could pick my camera up. This one below was photographed late in the evening as I was driving back to camp. It was overcast and the light was very weak. Out the corner of my eye I saw this rhino in the distance walking towards the road when I realised it was a blackie. He/she kept coming closer and I kept clicking away. When it realised something was in its way (my 4x4) it snorted and charged my vehicle. When it realised the car was not moving out the way, it stopped in its tracks, snorted and turned around and disappeared back into the bush. My day was made, my trip was made.



These two sightings brought my total sightings of black rhinos over the past 13 months to 8 of which 7 have been photographed.

"Our" big boy. I still get the chills just thinking of this sighting.
BTW, it was SO's birthday pressie.

I just added the story at the Travel Tales forum...but for the ones not reading stories but like to see Black Rhino ...here a summary...

Even it helps just 0,0001 percent against poaching I will not mention the exact loction of this encounter. Let’s say it was somewhere in the south

There… the youngster was following mom…. As it should be and is described with Black Rhino… child walks Behind mother as one of the differences with white rhino where the babies / youngsters are walking in front of the mother

Again coming a bit closer …this was maximum… and really… heart pounding… fighting against going away…and making close-up… At that moment stories about attacking / aggressive black rhino’s are going like a flash through your mind… but she was relaxed we stayed…

Seen 'somewhere' during my recent trip. I was travelling on a dirt road when I saw 3 Blackies standing in the road. Mother, sub-adult and a very young calf. As i was slowing down they crashed into the undergrowth. In this photo the mother turned round to see who I was and her calf is just behind her. Not the best photo due to the thick bush, but still another Blackie for me.

Was wondering about the number of Black Rhino in Kruger and came accross this very informative research/population assessment done by Sam M. Ferreira, Cathy C. Greaver and Mike H. Knight. First I just want to congratulate ALL scientists, Universities, Conservation Societies and of course Sanparks'own Scientific Services for the marvelous job they're doing. One always wonders (unfortunately, especially in light of the latest sanparks dribble about "what people want in a park") whether conservation and protection of biodiversity are still at the forefront of the sanparks mandate. So it is nice to see that there are still people out there doing what needs to be done to understand and protect our species/environment for the future.

Just came across some pics from our 2012 trip to Kruger that we had of a Blackie who was actually grazing, just to confuse me!
