I'm not sure if this has made the news in ZA but on German news there was a report of a group of hippos killing a crocodile that came too close to some of their young ones (in serengeti)...I'm neither sure if it would be against the regulations to post some of the pictures they offered

Evening ice, well it happens more frequently than what is generally thought. Hippo are extremely territorial and become fierce when they have new borns with them.
I've seen a mother hippo give chase to a buffalo who had come to drink too close to where her little boy was resting. They can run very very fast and that buffalo was very lucky indeed.

Evening Ice, from what I can tell of the pictures both hippo and croc were confined into a very small space and looked like in a panic. The exact sequence of the pictures is 3, 2 and last is number 1.
Brilliant pics and would be nice to witness that kind of action :cam:

yeah, I noticed, too that the sequence of the pictures is incorrect...the article explains that the croc came too close to a mother hippo and her young one...the hippos drew closer and circled the reptile, the croc panicked and then made one deadly decision - it wanted to escape over the backs of the hippos...

In fact if you look at picture n° 1 you can see a baby hippo just below the female munching on the croc.

Cant always decide which pictures to edit and use...so sometimes I do a triptych.

Taken at Sweni dam, this fellow was protesting against another males presence. Shame the fights were all pretty much under water.

This photo was taken in January 2010. The Olifants river was flowing strongly and whilst viewing the river from the high level bridge this mother and calf emerged from the river onto a small sandbank. The calf looks like it was only a couple of days old.
