My wife, Joan, and I recently spent a wonderful 13 days in Kruger. Besides seeing the BIG 5 we also saw a number of unusual interactions between animal and animal or bird and animal.

The following series of 15 photos depicts the crocodile attack we were blessed to witness. There was only one other car there and he never had a camera.

The attack was over in 8 seconds and it is interesting to note that the hippo that can be seen in some of the pics did not move throughout the whole event. Also, the impala were back drinking water within 3 minutes whilst their companions body floated past.

We had been sitting at Nkaya Pan for about 10 minutes on 18 August 2013 watching the hippo, a buffalo grazing and two crocodile lazing in the water. Some impala came down to drink and we noticed that one of the crocodiles turned towards the impala and disappear beneath the water. We were sure that an attack was imminent. Joan kept her 500ml lens on 150ml and focused on the impala drinking as she did not know quite where the attack would take place. Suddenly the water exploded and Joan pressed the shutter and held it down. In all there were about 22 photos. These are what we think are the best 15. I have put in the times as per the camera for interests sake. The photos have been heavily cropped.

Well done for having burst on! Incredible pics of what must have been an exciting experience.. I once saw a crocodile attempt to kill an impala, but the herd got away. Did the other impalas make any distressed noises as they fled? Where is the Nkaya pan?

Thank you everybody for your positive comments.

Graham_5000 - We did not hear any distress calls from the impala.
Nkaya Pan is 17km south of Satara on the H1-3.

Hi Steamtrainfan, great to hear from you again.
While I am not fond if kills, this must have been an amazing experience!

God bless,
