During our trip Oct. 2009, we booked an early morning drive out of Croc Bridge. The minimum for the trip was 4 persons, but no one else signed up. So, we paid for the other two seats, and had a private drive!

Our driver was a sweet, quiet lady named Constancia. Her first words to us were "let's see what gifts the bush will offer us today.'' Just after daybreak, she turned on to a private sand road, and there sitting in the middle of the road, was a serval! She cut the engine, and we sat very quietly, just watching. After about five minutes, it bounded off into bush. It was beautiful, and Constancia really impressed upon us how lucky we were to see the serval! No photos - we were scared to move!

A little later, along a tar road, Constancia saw two other animals - humans! - dart across the road up ahead! We just caught a glimpse of someone running into the trees. She was very concerned about them being poachers, so she turned around and drove back to Croc Bridge to alert authorities.

So a very special sighting, and a very unnerving sighting as well!

Taken on the S130 in March 2009 very early in the morning after leaving CB. We followed it up the road for some distance but this was the only photo we could get showing it's face. It wandered from side to side and sometimes off the road. Only our second Serval the other was on a night drive from Skukuza could not get a photo though.

Tried loading photo through flickr and tinypic but no success there should be an easier way. Have no problem on other sites tutorials are out of date.
As you can see finally managed to upload photo.

Very lucky.

Bush Baptist that was a brilliant sighting and I thought we did well.

(I have only seen a very distant serval on a night drive from satara)

Serval are HIGH on my wishlist for coming december trip. I gather from combing through the forums that area between LS and Tshokwane is the best chance of seeing serval. As there are quite a number to roads in this area, what route N of LS would forumites recommend to increase one's chances??? Same route as welshboy S29 then S128? (I realise it always comes down to right place right time)

And early morning preferable to late afternoon?

Thanks in advance!

Terri-Lee I followed the forum pages for a couple of weeks to what people where seeing and where they were seeing the animals. We had good days, the serval day being excellent, and bad days CB to Berg en Dal with one herd of elephants. It is purely luck if we had not of taken a trip to Mlondozi picnic point we may have arrived at the section of road before the serval appeared. On our last morning before returning to the UK we were going to simply drive up to Afsaal then head back out to the airport, but my wife suggested taking the S121 and S114 around back to camp for lunch instead. We ended up seeing Ellies, Buffalo, White rhino and a leopard so it made for a good morning before the long flight home.

I have said it before, I would trade 50 lions for a good serval sighting. It is my favourite cat.

I agree with Bush Baptist! Love seeing these shy cats. I found the Lower Sabie area to be especially productive. Have seen serval on 3 occasions. Twice on H10 and once on S28 in one trip. Have to admit I think luck was on our side! :D

I thought I had lost this pic. Imagine my elation when I found it over the weekend while unpacking boxes :) Taken in KNP on the S37 in 2009
