Just a short follow up for those who have been following the injured (badly) leopard near Skukuza. I believe rangers have tracked it down and established that the leopard had been badly hurt by a pride of lions. The decision was made to put it out of its misery!

Poor leopard :(

I did not realise rangers intervened unless an animal was injured as a result of human activity?

Sad to read about the loss of a leopard and the "human side" of me say right decision made just because I don't want to see any animal suffer whether caused by human or natural.
But as Graham_5000, I also wonder where the rangers draw the line when to intervene and when not too when it's a natural cause of nature.

I saw the pictures of this poor creature. While I know nature can be cruel and that it is, by and large, better to let the natural course of events unfold, this was the right decision. The wounds were horrific.

I'm not sure if the link will work, but it was on the SANParks - Kruger National Park Facebook page.

{Mod's Edit. Please note this picture is not for the faint-hearted. The injuries are pretty horrific}

There was an enormous amount of interest and sympathy, as well as the pic on @LatestKruger on Twitter Kruger Sightings. I saw the pic and whilst I agree with the policy to let nature take its course this leopard might have caused more injury to other animals who came too close, apart from its distress and agony. The rangers definitely took the right decision!

We aren't going to post the picture on here, it's just too graphic.

Rangers have no hard and fast rules on when to treat injured animals but will take each and every case on its individual merits. There are guidelines on when to intervene but they are just that, guidelines.

Thanks for the feedback and to understand the actions taken by rangers. Not an easy job to make a decision either way.
