Not necessarily even then. You can see anything and everything in rain, no matter how hard. I've seen packs of wild dogs in torrential rain, and leopard in a downpour so heavy that it was not possible to continue driving, even though we were on a tar road.

Rain, especially hard rain, as well as thunder and lighting, make for excellent hunting conditions.

Interesting perspective, Johan. I'd say there are times you can see predators in the open, although I've mostly seen them huddling under bushes or trees, or even overhangs, when the rain torrents down. Then again, wild dogs seem to like to get out and lie in the open when the rain picks up - we experienced three hours of a wild dog pack on the S26 with rain that threatened to drown us each time we opened the window to attempt pics; and not another car that ventured out in weather apparently so foul. Interesting that you saw Prince Leopard strutting his stuff amongst the downpour; is it true that hunting opportunities increase then? :hmz:

I believe it does improve hunting.

Reason for this, I watched a series of big cat diaries many years ago, and there one of the presenters mentioned that during hard rain, the prey animals turn their back towards the downcoming rain. Of course this happend, and you could see how the thompsons gazelle were turning their backsides towards the rain. Then they showed how a cheetah took full opportunity of this rainstorm coming down, and it also makes the gras more slippery.

Also I have noticed this happening on a few other nature programmes I watched.

Thank you for the detailed info, Lepardfan; will be driving in heavy rain from now on.

Anecdotally, I recall a night in Madikwe with thunder and lighting. The following morning every single lion pride in the reserve was found on a kill. Back then Madikwe was about 200% overstocked with lions, so there were quite a few prides around.

I have found sightings diminish with rain.

On my last morning last week it absolutely poured down didnt see much so we headed back to camp to pack up and head to the gate to drive back to jhb.
Barely had a sighting from skukuza to melalane.
Although the rain had lightened up a bit

I agree, we've had countless leopard sightings as well as a few lion sightings during heavy rain. For us it seems like wildogs love to appear in light rain.. Happy sightings 4 2014 ppl!

My wife & I had a 4 night stay in the park from the 27th to the 31st of December. It pretty much rained the entire time we were there. We stayed at Satara, Skukuza & Croc Bridge (the South of the park it terrible in season from a traffic point of view...)

We were fortunate enough to see wild dog on the H4-2, several lion sightings, a leopard on a kill, loads of hyena, rhino etc. The sightings were fantastic, however, it does make for challenging photo taking.
Unfortunately, I never got that elusive Caracal that I so badly want to see...next time, perhaps when it isn't raining :D

During the rain I see water: after the rain, it's sunshine or starshine.

I saw one driving up to Pafuri early November, a couple of kms south of Baobab Hill on the H1-8. First I've seen in a very long time.
