Very quiet around Pretoriuskop at the moment. Spent two nights there last week. Saw one small herd of kudu and one small herd of buffalo. One or two elephants. No impala even  . Some nice birds, including lizard buzzard, brown-crowned tchagra, yellow-throated longclaw, and other small birds. But generally speaking, very very quiet especially the small loops around Pretoriuskop e.g. S14 and S7. The veld is still quite wet, with flowing water (mini "river crossings") in several spots on Voortrekker Rd and the S14.

Voortrekker Road from about Ship mountain to Afsaal more interesting, including nice lion sighting and other big five, many birds.

Also hyena den just off the tar road (H1-1, "Napi Rd" I think it's called) on the dirt road to Transport Dam.

I have to agree with Dabchick. SO, little one and I were there in April and it was also very quiet around Pretoriuskop. We try to visit the park at least twice a year and always stay at Pretoriuskop, this time round was by far the quietest we've seen it. Hoping for a bit more activity when we're there next month with the in-laws - it's the father-in-law's first visit to Kruger in his 76 years on earth

@ Dabchick : Those 'mini river crossings' that you wrote about,
will our Getz be able to do them?
Or should we rather stick on the H3 from Malelane Gate
and then the H1-1 to get to Pretoriuskop?

@Graeme & Nicky

It should be fine with those on Voortrekker Rd - just go slowly. A small hatchback (possibly a Clio or an Aygo) passed us from behind, and we didn't find them in trouble further down the road, so obviously they got through with no problem.

The one on Fayi loop was rather deep - I would probably not attempt that one with a Getz.

Hi there.I stayed at BnD from 10/06/13 to 15/06/13 and had good sightings of the big 5.On my last day wich was Friday 14/06 i decided to look for Wild Dogs in the PKOP area. What a wise decision  Almost in front of the gate to the camp a DEN next to the road under a big green bush.I counted 8 adults resting next to the road with more moving under the bush and puppy yelps coming from the tall grass under the bush :D What a sighting :cam: :cam: :cam: Took lots of them.

We'll be resting our heads at P/Kop on the 15th & 16th of December.

It'll also be our first time doing a Sunset Drive at this camp. Let's hope the animals come out to say hi.

Any updates on sightings around Pretoriuskop?
Can`t believe that the last sighting worth mentioning was 14 June 2013!

Will be there in 3 days if all goes as planned

I stayed in Pretoriuskop less than 3 weeks ago and saw wild dogs 3 days in a row, 3 leopards, a cheetah near Napi Boulders and another one at Transport dam and also had 3 sightings of Reedbuck not too far from the camp.
I would be very interested to know if the dogs (it was a pack of 13 with some young ones) are still around. Itwould be great if you give a short (or long) report after your return  Have a great time 123

Forgot to mention my most special sighting: a crab that was walking on the tar road towards the camp. Never saw one before in Kruger

and a pic of a hunting dog:

and a resting female leopard:

Thank you for the feedback flying cheetah.

I cannot remember any recent trip to KNP without seeing cheetah ( not complaining ), but wild dog, leopard and lion are very high on the wish list! Not to mention black rhino.

Looks like the doggies have a den around there, I will be on the lookout for them and give feedback.
