Sounds right it leaves an hour before the gates close and the gates close at 5:30pm in August

For those that have stayed at Balule, which roads in your opinion are the best to travel in the early morning / late afternoon?

Thank you Spargish; I'll give 'em a try.

I'm never quite sure which roads to take in that area as there seems to be many that are equally exciting.

Anyone else have any advice for the Balule area?

We have found Bangu waterhole to be really productive if you can spend time there. I would say aim for an afternoon drive there as the sun is then behind you.

Otherwise all roads in the area are lovely - the drives along the river, both to the Olifants camp and along the tar, are really scenic and lovely.

We love to spend time on the Balule bridge too.

A beautiful area.

I have spent a lot of time in Balule lately.
Late afternoons I enjoy the Ngotso area - the satara crowds leave fairly early to make it back to camp, and you have a lovely drive back in the opposite direction. I have had some awesome sightings in that area late afternoon !
Early mornings I enjoy the drive down the S90 and then left onto the S41. Once again I have had some amazing sightings on this road including 5 male lions in the road for close to an hour before anyone else arrived.
Balule is by far the best camp in KNP

Hi,

I returned from KNP on Saturday and during that time I spent 2 nights at Balule. Not sure of the road designation but the gravel road leading from Satara to Balule was incredible for game sightings. We drove the road twice between 15:30 and 17:25 and once between 6:00 and 9:00.

During this time we saw:

Hyena (3 times)
Black Back Jackal (twice)
A herd of 15 male Kudu accompanying about 25 - 30 females
Korhaan
Kori Bustard
Secretary Birds
Lions
Impala
Buffalo
Steenbok
Grysbok
Duiker
Rhino
Elephant
Wild Dog
Waterbuck
Bateleur
Martial Eagle
Cape Vulture
Lilac Breasted Rollers
Magpie Shrike
Dwarf Mongoose
Slender Mongoose
Zebra
Wildebeest
Giraffe
Burchell's Coucal
Ground Hornbill
Wood Kingfisher
Yellow Billed Stork
Marabou Stork
Black Shouldered Kite
Guinea Fowl
3 different types of Francolin (or whatever they're now called)
Crowned Plover
Blacksmith Plover
Grey/Red and Yellow Hornbills
and not 1 single Pied Crow :-)

In the camp itself we could hear the hippo in the river having a discussion and a Leopard had a few things to say about life at around 3am.

I saw more on that one road than I saw in the rest of the park during my 2 week stay despite the fact that for the rest of the time game sightings were excellent. (the big 5 three days in a row!)

The camp was superb as well. Next time I'm booking in there for longer.

I would suggest you take the S90 towards satara about 4k's then join the S89 towards the tar road, there's been good reports lately mainly in the morning, afternoon S92 will do with lost of game going down to drink before it gets dark.

What an incredible three drives down the S90, Nick! Wild dog, a huge herd of kudu, and grysbok! And all that other lovely stuff. Amazing. Guess you'll be staying at Balule a lot more!

The Ngotso dam is my favorite place around Olifants, its more like a zoo than a park, you get animals very close, a record of big 5 within 2km.
