Hi,

we (family wit htwo 17 year old boys) will be in Kruger two first weeks in October 2014 starting in Punda Maria driving South.

I have read that Mananga & Madlabantu 4 x 4 Trails are closed thru heavy rain. Is this still the case?

Are Nonokani & Northern Plains 4 x 4 Trail are till open?

Anyone any idea? :-)

Thanks in advance
Holger

The trails can only be booked on the morning you would like to do the trail in case of rain where they would then be closed.
Remember you must have a 4 x4 vehicle in order to be able to do these trails.

The latter two are not open any more; only the Mananga and Madlabantu - and the website says both are still closed.

Last report on the forums by someone who did Mananga.

Similarly, last report on the forums for Madlabantu

However I notice that you are staying in Letaba? I may have an alternative for you.

Along the H-9 between Letaba camp and Phalaborwa Gate are a few "Low Maintenance" roads. You can drive these without booking - at your own risk, in a high clearance (but not necessarily a 4x4) vehicle and only in dry conditions. You aren't allowed to get out of your vehicle and game in the area is scarce so you might not see much. However, they are little used roads so very quiet and I thoroughly recommend them, they feel like going on a mini adventure.

Have a read in this topic for more information - Low Maintenance Roads

We drove a couple of these Low Maintenance roads last November - all were quiet but interesting. However, we certainly needed the 4x4 we were driving and would not have made it to the end if we had been driving a normal sedan....and that was with good weather.

Thanks a lot to all of you (especially for DB for the map):-) It's so great to get your experience and your advice :-)

We decided already that the low maintenance roads are a MUST for us :-) We do have a 4x4 Toyota Hilux 2.5 Diesel. So we are very optimistic and we have decided that the weather will be good too ;-)

Thanks again
Holger
