I will be visiting the KRUGER National Park in January 2015 & would like the best roads/ areas / times to have the best chance of viewing cats ...... Lion, leopard etc ?

Please advise as I have not been very successful, especially concerning Leopard !! :(

Looking forward to your responses.

Yours in conservation, Lindsay

Hello there . CATS well its the luck of the draw I am afraid . I have seen leopards in all places in the park ... just right place right time. Best is to look at the board when you arrive in camp to see where people have seen the animals and also ask around ..
anyway good luck.
You might see a yellow ribbon or two as we will be in the Park the end of January.

Lindsay.desmond, Firstly a warm welcome to the Forum.

It seems you will be at Olifants, hence might want to look for a leopard spot close by? If so, up the S94 and S46 towards Letaba next to he river, I had seen quite a number of sightings plotted on the Sightings boards, but never seen one myself in this area.

Hope it helps.

Hi Lindsey,

well lions and leopards could be found in the park everywhere, however, luck is indeed as well.

Try the S39 Timbavati road for leopard or maybe also for lion - We had luck on that road with both.

Follow Kaapsedraai's hint as well as these road can offer quite a variety of animals on top.

Have fun

lindsay.desmond, a warm welcome :gflower:

I have had a lovely Leopard sighting close to the S39 turn off. It was on the main road. There are a number of where they have been spotted.

Like Pumbaa, I have been lucky with Lion on the S39.

Why not go on a night drive, that sometimes brings Leopard sightings. The rangers often know favorite hang outs.

Good luck and enjoy

Also a warm welcome to the forum from me Lindsay.desmond!

Keep an eye on the sighting boards at the camp altho this is often not all that accurate.
but Lions can also lie dormant for large parts of the day.
Try and chat to others staying in the camp, amazing what tips one can pick up from that.
Otherwise drive slowly keeping a careful lookout, Leopards often lie up trees during the day.
Maybe book a guided sunset/night drive.
But do remember the right place and time is really what counts! 8)

As the others have said above, seeing cats is a matter of luck.
Right place at the right time.

I have seen Lions are few times on the road down to Satara (H4-1)
This road is also very good for Hyenas

As everyone says it is really to do with a lot of luck, driving slowly and being in the right place at the right time to see the cats. I met a guy once you said he just drives around looking for the traffic jams :o( Oh dear.
For me, I drive around on my own and am out from the time the gates open until as close as possible to closing time. I am “that driver” poodling along at about 15 kph to ensure that I don’t miss something and stopping to watch everything.
I now keep a record of every road as I drive down and of every single mammal (and a lot of birds) that I see and I am delighted to say that on every trip to the incredible Kruger Park I have had some amazing sightings.
Here are my cat sightings for my trip last November. The 16th and the 19th count as two of my best days ever in the park.
Good luck Lindsay and have a wonderful trip in January.
