As promised a few old postcards I have unearthed.

The first has no date on it and also no photographer. It merely says Kruger National Park, entrance-Shingwidzi Rest camp



The following two were both posted at Punda Maria camp on 2 July 1955 and stamped at Soekmekaar the following day. The photographer of both were Dick Wolff.
I decided to post the actual message on it too. It is almost impossible to remember that way of communication in today’s electronic world!

Back (written by my mother to her parents}

(Translated: 1 Punda Maria
Dearest Dad and Mom,
We drove through the night. Willie’s car broke down just outside the Park. They went back to Louis Trichardt. We are still here in the camp. Expecting them any moment. Everything else is lovely. I tried to phone every day last week but there was no answer. We did move and are settled. That is why I did not write.

We could not send a telegram. Rikie and family is fine. Wynand just arrived. Somebody towed in Willie’s car and it will now be all right. We will come and visit when we get back. Mother you must come and look at our new home, It is lovely!
We are going home on the 11th.

The fourth on has no photographer mention either and merely states lioness, Kruger Park on the back. The postcard was stamped at Pretoriuskop on 8 July l954 and written on the Saturday.



Back (written by my father to his parents-in-law)

(Translation) Dear Parents,
Safely arrived. Enjoyed the drive. Everything went well. Children slept well. Sorry we can’t send a telegram. We left 8 o’clock last night and arrived 5 o’clock this morning.

Those were the days!!

This is a postcard my dad bought on his first trip to Kruger in 1958. There is no photographer's name and the title is "Elephant Family in Kruger".

It seems at the time when the photo of the entrance to Shingwedzi camp was taken , the entrance was close to where the Rentmeester guesthouse currently is ?

This is very Interesting /fun / informative and instructive

Thanks to all for the great submissions, especially the messages on the used post cards. Just stunning stuff. Ndloti the previous gate was just east of the circle of Mlala Palms in the camp.

I remember my gran always used to send us postcards when they were in the park. At least by then they could let us know by phone that they were safe! Imagine if you had to post it now... You'll be home before the postcard!

Surely they can't be talking about you then?

I have the exact same postcard of the elephant family. The photographer is E. Eliovson, Frameworthy Publications.

Will find a way to add 2 other postcards - am struggling here!

This postcard is published by S.A.R. Publicity and Travel Department and the photograph is by Dr P D Swanepoel.

These postcards were on sale in the 1950's and 1960's.

What an interesting Thread. Hope there are lots more to come.

Flutterby, the American cars from the 50's in your Postcard bring back so many memories of my teenage years.

I have enjoyed this thread so much. My first trip to Kruger was ten years ago (2001 - been back 7 or 8 times since). I hope that I am still around in thirty to forty years to post my pics from 2001, when newbies of the next generation look at them and remember when....

I have the same postcard dated 24th August, 1941.

I have just found an old post of animals drinking. It is titled "In the game reserve, Transvaal" and was posted in 1929!
