Thanks Mel@anie for sharing those wonderful pics. The second last of your camp ones marked "Lower Sabie?" I would say is Pretoriuskop and at a quick glance the Punda Maria pic is a mirror image of the picture (slide or negative). Thanks again for sharing these wonderful pics and I enjoyed the animal ones too!

Good memories , thanks M .

I think the photo of baboon on the roadsign was taken where the old Lower Sabie / Tshokwane road merged with the H1-2 ?

Mel@nie,
I don't remember what the old restaurant at Skukuza looked like - but your photo looks a lot like the Letaba restaurant?

Thanks for sharing

Dear Bennievis,

You are quite correct - that is Letaba Restaurant and not Skukuza.

Many thanks.

Gee Joep, now that photo brings back memories. We were in Skukuza in about end 1972 or beginning 1973. I had taken my mother with us and she had been to see if her food on the stove was ready. She had carried my little boy, forumite GlenD, believe it or not, in her arms. Luckily the food wasn't ready and so she went back to the hut which was just up from the 'kitchen'. The 'kitchen' was not far from the Sabie river. I think there was just one row of huts in front of ours.

About five minutes after she had left the 'kitchen', there was a big noise coming from that area and one of the staff, with a shovel, chopped the head off a black mamba, that had been in the 'kitchen.

Wow Joep, three generations in Kruger at the same time during the olden days sure is a treasure. Thank you for sharing your precious memories

I still remember the beat of the big drum announcing mealtimes at the restaurants. :) The real sound of Africa. We use to dress up for the occasion, that would be wearing "vellies" instead of flip-flops or going barefoot. I use to love the melba toast served with the soup.

I'm getting carried away again ................

Thanks to Mel@nie, Anne-marie, Bennievis & Chip for comments and sharing! Yes, that melba toast Mel@nie, I can just about taste it again, together with the usual bland boarding school style soup! Yes, those memories are extremely precious, of times with loved ones of which we only these memories to treasure! Those camp kitchens with the smell of the coal stoves on a winter morning!

Thanks to all and lets enjoy the memories!

Thanks, Ndloti, yes, it was coal and for the stoves and when I worked in Skukuza in the early nineties, the kitchen at the tents was the last with coal stove. I tried to keep it there, but to have coal supplied for one kitchen was not viable and it also soon disappeared.

Thanks for sharing.

Dear Carolynn,

Many thanks for feedback. The old N'wanetsi picnic spot was downstream from where it is now (closer to Mocambique border). I will try and get details on reason and exact date of closing. It was a quaint little spot under a thicket of nice shady Tamboti trees.

Kind regards.

This is a great thread.
Thanks to all contributors.
One can almost fell the heat and taste the dust and smell the bush and the camp fires and hear the chat and tales and fibs at the braai areas.
The photos at the old Nwanetsi picnic spot and the Gorge camp it was hot and the mystery . . . . .
the Letaba restaurant really took me back to August 1967, Punda Maria must PLEASE not be modernized it still epitomizes the OLD KRUGER.
This is what made KRUGER so special.
Please continue posting your photographs.
