Wild Card

Unread postby travelbirdie » Sun Jul 07, 2013 11:03 pm

Is it possible to purchase the International Wild Card at Mapungubwe? I am hesitant to buy it online after reading about people not getting their cards in the mail. We are in the USA and will be traveling around South Africa for 6 weeks. We will be arriving in early September.

Hi travelbirdie and Welcome!

The best thing for you to do is to purchase your Wild Card on line a few days before you leave (it is valid from the date of purchase rather than the date of first use, so this gives you longer validity). You will receive a confirmation letter, which is all that you need for parks entrance. If you wait to buy the card at a park, you won't get a card, but only a receipt and then you still have to go to the Wild Card website to update your details. IMO purchasing the "card" on line and using the confirmation letter is your best option. Chances are that you won't actually receive a physical "card" for months -- if at all. Sadly, since SANParks took over managing the Wild Card there have been nothing but problems :wall:

Have a great trip! Mapungubwe is very special.

We are in the same boat.

The "catch" that I am scared of, is that it seems that the confirmation letter is only valid for a month. We are also going to be in South Africa for six weeks...so what do you do for the last two weeks?

Maybe someone has a solution?

I have not heard of confirmation letter only being valid for a month. It should not matter, the confirmation letter shows the validity of the card whether you physically have it or not. So they could look up on their systems and see that you are entitled to the privileges of the card and that it is paid up.
If they are not able to verify using their systems, they have to accept the confirmation letter and not make their problems yours.

Wild Card did say that they would stop accepting the Confirmation Letter after 45 days but they have never implemented it, the confirmation letter can still be used.

The best think to do, as Arks says, is to apply on line a few days before you leave so you don't have to re-enter your details again when you return.

There were problems a few months ago with the Postal strike in South Africa but cards are now being delivered. Overseas customers should get their card within 4-6 weeks.

I'm going to move this to the Wild Card forum soon.
The GREAT 2015 Online Auction is here. Get your bids in soon, it won't be around for ever.

I used my letter at Bontebok on Saturday. I bought the Wild Card in March. It has all the details that are needed on it, and I would raise hell if it were not acceptable, as I still have not received the card. (But the reception staff were wonderful so I didn't have to......).

SANParks would be shooting itself in both feet by refusing to accept it, given the inability to get the cards out.

I didn't automatically receive my letter either. I had to contact HQ.

This area has been a problem for some years now and one would have hoped it had been ironed out by now.

B.B, if you go online again to check your details, you may find some blanks that need to be filled in or altered even though you may have filled in all requested details already.
Then maybe the wildcard will be delivered.
But best of all is to give them a call on 0861 GO WILD (469 453)
They are very helpful!

Thanks kite,

Theproblem with me going online is that I have an expired card and a 'live' card and the system gets confused saying "Duplicate entry", but it does not have the savvy to realise one is expired.

I have pointed this out.

It's apparently even more complicated than that, BB. What I was told is that you get a 'new' number when you renew, but NOT a new card. Rather, you must link your new number with your old, master number -- somehow 'they' can't do this automatically, or just keep the original number, as the old (and IMO far superior) Infinity system did. Mind boggling :wall:  :sniper:

Not sure what you mean by an 'ID number'? :hmz:

Sorry, Arks.
Producing my South African ID number (confirming my nationality) was all that I needed, but not RSA residents would need their passports.

Thanks for clarifying  And agree it's not really recommended, best to have at least the confirmation letter with (and you likely would need the ID or passport as well).
