As you are on the topic of snakes the following snake visited our safari tent at one of the reserves we just visited. It took me a while to convince the snake that it would be better off getting into the container I offered it so it could be transported a couple of meters away into the bush. We were lying on the bed reading when I noticed the snake's head coming through the top opening of the zips. Just go to show that one has to keep your eyes open for any such "danger"

Anybody have any idea of what snake this is?

Not that I know snakes very well, but I do have a few books with good photos. Whereabout did this incident happen? This can help to ID the snake as some species can be eliminated depending on the area where it occurred. Looks like a Forest Cobra, but it is highly unlikely if it was in reserves adjacent too Kruger as they are mainly associated with the Zululand coast and Mocambique.

Photo was taken in a reserve in northen Zululand close to the little town of Mkhuze. It looks bigger on the photo than in real life. I will estimate it to have been ± 40cm in lenght

40 cm is still 40 cm of snake :shock:

Harmless Marbled tree snake on the hunt for a ghecko or two...

20 years catching and keeping snakes.. but im always happy for a second opinion.

I was carrying 2 bags to the car ( bare foot or course) and i looked down to se ethe guy striking away at me on the path. I did drop the babgs and jump back. had no idea what it was. but being the daft animal i was i caught it. took a pic and released it away from the other huts

Indeed a Dipsadoboa aulica, but the common name is a Marbled tree snake and not a Cross-barred tree snake (Dipsadoboa flavida) as the cross- barred has a distinct eye line running to the nose. Nice sighting! :D

my books out of date.. but no need to worry another excuse to get an up to date one

My book states


A marbled tress snake was described in 1989 by Rasmussen. it occurs from extreme southern Mozambique along the coastal zone of east africa tosouther somalia. It appears to be smaller than the cross barred treee snake with a max length of 61cm
