Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

Micetta - yes, I'm Australian by nationality, but I live in England because I married an English lady. I was actually born in SA but was three years old when the family moved to Australia so I didn't have much say in it.

billyf - you're correct about the forum being addictive. It's a remarkable forum, and the enthusiasm of the forumites for the parks, the animals, and the adventures really shows.

Regards,
Roger

It's an old Australian slang word meaning "the real thing" or "the genuine article". Sometimes spelled "ryebuck".

Roger.

Hi Roger the Ribuck. Welcome to the forum. Am I mistaken, but did they use the word in "Waltzing Matilda"?

Hi OWN,

It's not in Waltzing Matilda, but there is another old Australian bush song The Ribuck Shearer.

SONG:"The Rybuck Shearer" – Traditional Australian Bush Ballad
The Rybuck Shearer
(traditional)
1. I come from the south and my name is Field,
And when my shears are properly steeled
It's a hundred or more I have often peeled
And of course I'm a rybuck shearer.
Chorus:
If I don't shear a tally before I go,
My shears and stone in the river I'll throw;
And I'll never open Sawbees to cut another blow,
To prove I'm a rybuck shearer.
2. There's a bloke on the board and I heard him say
That I couldn't shear a hundred sheep in a day.
But one fine day, I'll show him the way,
And prove I'm a rybuck shearer.
Chorus
3. Yes, one fine day, but I'm not saying when,
I'll up off my tail, and I'll into the pen,
While the ringer shears five, I'll shear ten,
And I'll prove I'm a rybuck shearer.
Chorus
4. There's a bloke on the board, and he's got a yellow gin,
A very long nose and a wart on the chin,
And a voice like a billygoat spitting on a tin,
And of course, he's a rybuck shearer.
Chorus
But if I don't beat his tally before I go,
My shears and stone in the river I'll throw,
And never open Sawbees to cut another blow,
And prove I'm a rybuck shearer.
KUDU's mean Well done and Thank you

Bodembo is the name of a character in a book I am working on. He is a baboon.
The name is derived from the Afrikaans description of the way a baboon drinks water.
For readers who do not understand Afrikaans, it can be translated as Bottom up.

My alias has nothing to do with nature/wildlife. I have a grand-daughter who was born 90% deaf. When she started talking at age about 2, I was sitting on the bed with her and pointing to her and saying her name 'Daniella' and then pointing to me and saying 'gramps'. This happened a few times and eventually she said "No, you CHIP". The name has stuck and my grand-children who have followed all call me by that name. My avatar - well I couldn't very well photogragh one chip now!!!!!!! :D
