You don't need to even leave the camps - these were taken from the Letaba restaurant. They were flying under the verandah roof, catching flies etc with a very loud 'snap' then perching to enjoy the feast!

What is unusual about this bird?

Well, it was seen (photographed) in an area where they are not supposed to be - at Augrabies National Park about eight kilometres into the game reserve.

In South Africa, common only in lowveld woodland of NW and Limpopo Provinces, Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Natal. Isolated populations in Free State/N. Cape along the Vaal, Modder, Riet and Vet rivers. Roberts VII shows all the places the WFBE had previously been recorded and the Augrabies NP is about 400 km north-west of the closest record!

Have not spotted the W F BEE EATER but spotted this SOUTHERN CARMINE BEE EATER near OLIFANTS

I just found one of these guys in Grahamstown, seems a small breding population has started up in the Fish River here in the Eastern Cape..quite good news!
