The veld at Addo is looking so good that the Herons and egrets are everywhere eating locusts amongst the flowers!

Bubulcus ibis

Habits: Highly greagrious birds feeding on insects disturbed by grazing mammals in grasslands. Often seen on mammals' backs. Sometimes fishes in shallow water. Large flocks gather in evenings around shorelines of damsand pans to drink before roosting. Flies in V-formation to and from roosts. They roost in great numbers in tres or reedbeds. May fly low in high wind.

Yellow bill, dark grey feet.

I would go with non breeding Cattle Egret.

Little Egret has a dark bill and yellow feet.

The red'ish eye also points to Cattle Egret for me.

The Yellow-Billed Egret is much bigger and the upper legs seems to a shade of yellow contrasting to the much darker rest of the leg. It also has a much longer neck.

It is a Juv. Cattle Egret. Not quite got the yellow crown and nape or legs.

The Bluegum and Pine trees in my home village in the Eastern Cape are inundated with various egrets, ibis's and herons, slowly destroying the trees. Here is a cattle egret in its breeding plumage, and further down, a breeding pair. Both slightly cropped, but straight from the camera (no colour enhancement !!)
