Hmmmm...no one??? Can anyone then direct me to someone who might know. Any spider experts in SA for instance?

Sorry I am not a spider expert at all, but your spider does look like a sac spider or maybe a wolf spider to me?

I am convinced it's a sac spider (well almost) and really would like a professional opinion. I still have the little guy and fed him some tiny insects. He seems fine and I intend releasing him. His positive identification will determine how far from my house I will release him though.

If it will help, they were caught in Port Elizabeth.

I do not think that it is a sac spider. I think that it is a rain spider. Reason, the sac spiders are a lot less hairy. They almost look pink / yellow on their legs and body.

Are the images' size ok? I see when you click on them they only open up 60%. I can post bigger size images here if you guys want and if that would make it easier?

Hey if it was a tarantula I could help but I googled it a bit and I would go for sac spider!!

I'm going to have to diasgree with Imberbe on this one. It definately looks like a Sac spider to me. I've been unfortunate enough to encounter these guys on multiple occasions, also unfortunate enough to be bitten as well. Not pleasant.

Rather be safe than sorry and dump him/her a considerable distance from your house and check the folds of your curtains and night frills on your bed for any possible egg cases/nests. But be careful, that's one of the ways I got bitten.

BGS, I'm not an expert, but it looks like a Baboon spider to me, also known as a Tarantula outside South Africa?

Genus AUGACEPHALUS (starbust spiders)
This genus was described earlier this year (Gallon, 2002) and is endemic to Southern Africa. It is represented by two species that occur in the Northern and Eastern parts of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The generic name refers to the prominent, radial markings on the carapace of the spiders.

Hi Folks

It's not a Sac Spider (most common species is Cheiracanthium furculatum). It's either a Wolf spider (Lycosidae sp.) or one of the Nursary Web spiders (Cispius sp). I'd go with the Wolf Spider.

I can see that it's not a Sac spider but the photos are not clear enough for a positive ID. Where are you in Southern Africa? Where do you find the spiders (In bathroom at night?) During what kind of weather do you find them in your house.

I cannot see your photo on the website but I can say that there has never been a Violin Spider found in Cape Town or the immediate surrounding areas.

I think it is a rain spider, Palystes superciliosus...
probably a immature that is why it looks a bit different
