Rufous-eared Warbler (Malcorus pectoralis) I’ve found them on numerous occasions in the Kgalagadi TFP along the road just outside Twee Rivieren camp (on the low shrub vegetation) as well as on the dune-road 10km from Twee Rivieren on the Auob river road towards Mata-Mata. Normally seen in the drier parts, as the karoo and western desert areas.
They are easily overlooked as a long tailed LBJ, but when up close you can see the lovely rufous ear patch and black breast band. The adults are almost alike with the female a bit duller with a narrow breast band. The juv. has no breast band and brownish ear coverts.
They are very noisy birds and can easily be lured closer by “spishing”, often causing them to pop up from inside a dense bush to see what the alarm is all about.
