They don't seem to be common in Kruger, I only recall seeing 1 on the S28 in the early morning, but on a single ride in the late afternoon in Kgalagadi, you can see 3 or 4 pairs.

Seen in Kgalagadi [Juvenile in a huge Camel Thorn on one side of the road while the parent sat in a smaller acacia on the other side], and in Kruger [seen hunting over Shingwedzi Campsite just after 05:00 one morning in October 2007].

Saw this one on the Red Rocks loop in July this year. Eating something....

Saw another near Pafuri, hunting and it caught a francolin

I like the nesting pics!! Saw my first of these guys near Biyamiti this year, and then again a few months back on the 'N1' towards Skukuza from Lower Sabie!! The call was insane!! :D

We've spotted the owl in an awkward position but we assume I was lying on a net. This picture was taken September 2008 on the S56 towards Babalala. Can anyone shed some light please.

Hi,
It's a Giant Eagle Owl(Pale beak, pink eyelids etc...). They normally breed in Winter until Aug/Sept and the nest is probably been taken over from a Raptor. Always nice to see them! Lucky you.

Thanks for the replies we just found it odd lying "flat" and not just sitting on the nest. Any explanation to that maybe?

BB you're right it is a hamerkop nest! The bird is sitting horizontally because it is either incubating eggs or brooding a small chick/s
