Beautiful birds. Saw this one in Kruger. Have also seen 3 lately at Walter Sisulu.

Lovely pic Granjan. :D

A bit off topic but still pretty funny,
my son, who is new into birding phoned me a few weeks back to tell me very excitedly that he had seen a Kingfisher in his garden, on enquiring which one it was, he said, you know, the normal one.
which going on the description fitted the Brown-Hooded variety.
So its now called the "normal" Kingfisher in our family.

If you look in the BIG Roberts7 you'll find that there are 6 recognized races of the familiar chat in our area. The cape race is Cercemola familiaris familiaris and the Pilanesberg one Cercemola familiaris hellmayri. Big Roberts also lists the differences. Many birds that we often assume are the same have these subspecies. The brown-hooded kingfisher, for example has 3 - and a question mark on the Namibian type!

Best birthday present you'll ever ever get!!! :D BBR, is like my birding bible!

Batmad, I think the yellow wash, is caused by the golden lighting, possibly early morning or pre sunset??! :hmz:
