Going throught my pocket size animal book last night ... I noticed the Eland ... another Antelope I would love to see ... Standing at an average of 1,70 meters at shoulder height, I was wondering if any of you have seen on of these majestic antelopes in the Park?

Yup, but that was 20 years ago. It was in Kruger and I seem to think it was more north

I also recall to have seen a small herd in the Letaba vicinity in 2001. Not a 100% sure, but will ask my friend that accompanied me on that trip whether he can recall anything.

I'm crazy about eland... however only saw 1 in KNP! Was about 5+ years back near Rabelais dam.
Would love to see a herd!

2001: One eland ±2km after right on the S41 from the S100
2002: One eland on the S41 just after crossing the N'wanetsi river
2004 One eland at N'wanetsi waterhole (S131 west of Letaba). Was still watching this eland when a lioness came walking past the car at speed, most probably trying to join the pride for the evening hunt?

Saw them quite a few times but that was in the late 80's and early 90's. Nothing more recent. But then again, only went to KNP last year for the first time in 10 years. So that explains it. :D

Remembering seeing them between Letaba and Olifants on the gravel roads. Also north of Letaba in the region of Middelvei wh if memory serves me right.

Saw plenty in Pta though

Here is a very poor pic of some eland we saw on our honeymoon trip last October. They were grazing with zebra and Tsessebe just off the tar road about 10km south of Baobab Hill.

We also saw a huge herd of Eland scrambling up a hill to a dam close to the Limpopo on the Eastern side of Mapungubwe. Unfortunately, no pics as they were too quick for us

Never seen them in Kruger, but a few splendid sightings in Mapungubwe.

Hiking in Golden Gate National Park gets you within 2m of these animals. They are quite used to people there:

Have only seen Eland in the Kruger in the north of the park. Saw a few in the Karoo. Hopefully will see more in Mountain Zebra.

I have NEVER seen Eland in KNP and I've been to the park more times than I can count :? Seen plenty in the Cape Parks; Postberg(West Coast National Park) has the FATTEST, I swear he looks cuddly, Eland I've ever seen! I have a pic of him eating in the wildflowers.

In June a group of 6 were seen just north of Mopani. I have also seen them fairly regularly around Babalala though not in June!

Never seen them further south though the books say they are there in small numbers.

Despite being a huge antelope (the largest) they are very 'shy' and rapidly dissappear when spotted.

One of the cutest things about Eland are their "clicky" knees. The joints in their knees make a clicking sound when they walk so, at night particularly, it is often that you hear them before you see them.
