Wish Ranger_Mkuze was here to settle it. I'll post tonight - need to find a decent question.

Finally I get to post: YAY!

Most of South Africa's butterflies belong to which family of butterflies, and why is this significant for the populations' survival?

If you include the subfamilies Danainae, Satyrinae, Acraeinae, and Charaxinae, it would be the family Nymphalidae....not sure of the second part of the question, other than the obvious "safety in numbers" survival technique. More info. please. Thanks!

You're obviously an expert, Africat. However, my source says otherwise. Not Nymphalidae, according to them. So, we may stand open to correction.

And I did word the second part of the question clumsily. What I mean is why does this family of butterflies place them in increased danger of extinction?

Second quess...if you elevate those subfamilies to family classification, then perhaps Lycaenidae. As their life cycles are closely linked to, and therefore dependent upon, specific plant, as well as ant, species, they are in peril should the survival of their host species be threatened for any number of currently relevant reasons.

Okay, three strikes, you're out! Someone else have a go at it?

Image

What is the name of what is depicted in the photo (either scientific or more common term), name a Genus it is found in, and what is its purpose?

As this doesn't seem to be a very popular quiz, I'll give a description of the image...also for those who may not be able to see it...and my photography left a whole lot to be desired as well.

It was a shot of the "hairs" in the anal fold of the rear wing...
Z-Z-Z-z-z-z-z-z.....

I seem to be the kiss of death for quizzes, which I only recently discovered. If there are no replies in a day or so, I'll answer this obviously extraordinarily intriguing question myself, so someone else can try to resuscitate this snoozer.

Do not be too hard on yourself Africat!

It is a very good question ...

A good question is not necessarily an easy one, as one often learn things in this way you would not otherwise have known ... and that is at least 50% of what the quizzes are about! The other 50% is to have fun!

So we need a good mixture of easy and hard questions. We do not want it to get too hard, because then the quiz tends to get exclusive. But on the other hand, some challenging questions make an excellent contribution.

So what I am saying is ... Batmad and I do not know the answer (cant you read BM? ) ... and will have to go and have a look at the books!
