Have seen these extremely shy ducks in a vlei on the gravel road from Orpen to Talamati on Wednesday. The male flew away into the tall grasses.
Think it might be Garganey??? What do you think?

Yup, most potential Garganeys end up as Comb Duck like this one.

The duck definitely is a juvie Comb Duck. They are notorious for impersonating Garganey but the bulgy bill gives it all away. Garganey is a very dainty looking duck, more like Yellow-billed or African Black Duck in terms of their general shape and size.

Hi All,

i have not see any reference to the very bright yellow spot that the males have near their vents. This isn't indicated in any of my books but I see it in a few of the pictures posted here.

Hi RainHard,

Interesting point, but I found it now illustrated in Roberts (A5 Fieldguide) as well as in the text. Nothing as you say in Sasol...

Just for your info, it carries an age restriction of PG18!

While floating along, minding my own business, out the corner of my eye I spot this babe...

...after a few seconds serious thought, I made a move on her...

...once I had her, I took her for a short trip...

...not much later I tried a real move on her...

...with my charm it didn't take too long and we were at it...

...she didn't hang around very long, but I wash real chuffed!!!

I need assistance with this ID please - the closest I get is the female Cape Shovellor but it doesn't have a white line through the eye. The area is also a problem since this was taken in greater Kruger.

It looks like a female Comb Duck, formerly called Knob-billed Duck.
