Hi has anyone got a picture of a grey climbing mouse - dedromus melanotis? I have searched the web and there seem to be very few pictures of this mouse. I am desperately trying to identify a mouse I found and there just seems to be so little information available on mouse species in South Africa. I am pretty sure that the little chap I found is a grey climbing mouse but it would be good to confirm it. Thanks

It does seem to be a bit sparse for pics of your mouse.

Answers.com say the following:

OTHER COMMON NAMES

English: African climbing mouse, gerbil mouse, fat mouse, forest mouse.

Looking at pics of the African Climbing Mouse is as follows:

http://www.google.com/images?q=African+ ... en___US235

If not O.K., you could try the other commona names?

Good luck,

Daan

Thanks for your help, still not sure but appreciate your effort. It would probably be easier if I posted a picture on the forum but really don't understand how I go about uploading and attaching a picture.

And another picture which shows his feet a bit better. He has a completely white underside. Image

Still haven't identified this little guy. Would appreciate some help, search through all my books and wonder if its a multimmamate or an acacia rat. Does anyone have an idea?

According to Skinner & Chimimba ("Mammals of the southern African subregion", 2005), the grey climbing mouse is grey on the dorsal side (top side), with a dark stripe from the shoulders to the base of the tail. The ventral side (underside) is greyish-white.
