Great info, Heike1968! Thanks ...
"Hummel" I like indeed - such an expressive compact description of the humming bumble bee; I'll not forget it.

Thanks. Heike!

The translation for "Hetzer" is "baiter", I just assumed it would be an animal too! :hmz:

Here's another one: "Marder"... :)

Yes, a "Marder" is an animal. The English word is marten. Some kind of a weasel.

Sëhr Gut, Madchen!

Now back to Afrikaans... :D

Still waiting for more on "akkedis"...

And perhaps one of our most common birds: "spreeu" (starling)

Of course; there are Afrikaans names for everything! Olifant and Leeu, respectively.
"Sehr gut, Mädchen!" Is that right?

African jacana = grootlangtoon? = direct translation = big long toe

(Sounds like a creature from my childhood memories who sneaked up on innocent dwarfs or like my ex-sister-in-law  ). Not very original, is it? Anyone has any suggestions on this Afrikaans name's origin?

:yaya:

Afrikaans ...Grootlangtoon

German ... Blaustirn-Blatthhnchen, Jacana

Portuguese ... Jacana-africana

French ... Jacana poitrine dore

Shoo, I've always enjoyed the lilt of Afrikaans - it has a such a soft, rhythmoc quality when describing things, and the names themselves are most often directly related to the thing's most obvious characteristics.
Not that I'm Afrikaans ... I just like some of your poets too.

Another one that makes me think:

English: striped cuckoo
Afrikaans: Gestreepte nuwejaarsvoël
Direct translation: Striped new year's bird?

Who flew over the cuckoo's nest when the clock striked 00:00?

And another:

English: Gorgeous bushshrike
Afrikaans: Konkoit

I can't find any other explanation but that of Newman:

It's call - a melodic, clear 'kong-kong-koit' or 'kong-kong-koit-a-koit'.

Scientific name: Malaconotus blanchoti

Xhosa: Umbhankro

Zulu: uHlaza

German: Graukopfwűrger, Riesenbuschwűrger

Portuguese: Picano-de-cabea-cinzenta

French: Gladiateur de Blanchot

Dutch: Spookklauwier

Italian: Averla di macchia testagrigia
