Just a little philosophical rant from my side ...

Many times we as humans try to order things, that is how our minds, culture and even language works. Nature does not always work like that. From there the little "post script" in that comment stating: "The situation get complicated in long lived species ....", etc. That is because everything do not fit in to the pigeon holes we want them to fit in to.

Every rule has an exception ...

By stating this I do not want to discredited the different terms just discussed. They are useful in describing different aspects of and stages in bird development. But they are merely that ... indications.

Maybe we should not be too rigid.

Philosophical rant over ...

Hi guys, good to be back on the birding forum after the Ratpack trip - missed you all!

For once I'm a bit stumped... Or am I being stupid!? Seen outside Satara on 31 Jan 09. What is this!? Size was (I guess) probably 30 cm. Unfortunately never turned around for us.

Look forward to your answers!

Going by the description in Roberts Bird Guide this is a juvenile African Goshawk. "White eyebrow and dark median throat stripe seperate it from smaller juv Little Sparrowhawk." Seems spot on!

I do remeber that throat stripe being African Goshawk now, thanks JoelR!

Just never knew if a young African Goshawk had a yellow cere or not! :hmz:

Hmm, I don't know guys. I don't have any reference material with me right now and I'm in a bit of a hurry but the general feel I get from this bird doesn't say either African Gos or Little Spar to me (the tail is wrong for Little Spar anyway).

As I say, I don't have any reference material with me now but I'[m tempted to call this a juvie Lizard Buzzard. Will return tomorrow to see what I can make of it.
