Identification Help - LBJs

Unread postby arks » Fri Jan 30, 2009 5:30 pm

Here's another that has me mystified (and it doesn't help that the day was overcast and the pix quite dark, so I've tried to "lighten" them, plus the birdie was quite far away), seen on 20 October 2008 along the H1-7. My guesses, from what looks closest in my Newman's, are perhaps a juvenile pied mannikin? Or a female pintailed whydah?? (Or more likely some sort of sparrow or female weaver??) I think I'm really "reaching" here?

Maybe I’m just plain stupid, but the following bird has me bowled-out  …seen in our garden in Bryanston, JHB
It’s got a very light eye and on all the photos I took, the head seems quite big…unfortunately it did not turn around and I was not able to see its back….seems to be rufous....help, please :D

It looks like a southern grey headed sparrow to me.

Thank you Peter :D
I tend to agree with you….have been chatting to an expert off-forum who also think it might be a Southern Grey-headed Sparrow….we are however still trying to figured out the very light eye colour. One can argue that this is merely due to the sun shining directly into the bird’s eye….but looking all the descriptions in my various literature, it appears to me the Southern grey-headed Sparrow has a brown iris….from the initial photo I posted, and the following one….the iris looks very pale….and have to be honest, this is why the bird looked odd to me and prompted me to take photos of it.
I’m wondering if this is not possibly an abnormality?

Hello there,

If anyone can confirm these sightings for me, it would be greatly appreciated! They were all seen in KNP in September 2009.

3. I think this one is a Neddicky?

Wingman,

Thanks for that!!

You think #3 is a grey-headed sparrow? The beak didn't look like a sparrow to me, that's how I came up with Neddicky.

Grey-headed Sparrow. The neddicky is much smaller like the size of a prinia/cisticola and tends to be very scruffy in appearance.

jnaflwr, could you please tell us where and when you saw this bird? Without at least some further information, ID is impossible.
