Is Table Mountain safe if you just do the touristy cable car up and down? We weren't planning to hike or go off by ourselves but we were hoping to get some kind of shuttle there and back from V&A Waterfront.

Quite safe Tiki,

The nonsense takes place in places where there are not a lot of people, or traffic.

If you want any more info, PM me and I would be glad to help.

Hi all

It sounds like things have calmed down quite a bit regarding security issues on table mountain. Does anyone know of any recent attacks because nothing has really been written in the media etc... (that I've heard of anyway).

From the home page, my words. A 'suspect' was caught on Lion's Head on Saturday after a couple was mugged and the 'suspect' was in possession of their goods. Another one escaped......

At least one will be out of circulation for a while.

Myself and my partner are visiting Cape Town for four nights in August. We are both keen (nature) photographers and are planning to visit Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulder's Beach and West Coast NP. Because we have to carry camera gear with us, we'd really like to get some tips about safety issues.

Hi Lumi and Welcome!

I had visited all those places as a solo female with camera gear and never had any problems. However, since I'm alone, I don't wander too far from my car, but as there are two of you, in most cases you should be just fine. I would just be normally aware of your surroundings in the parks. The mugging problems seem to be mainly around hiking trails on Table Mountain and Lion's Head, as well as the trails up the mountain from Kirstenbosch.

I've not heard of problems at Cape Point, Boulders (go to the southern entrance where there is a family swimming beach, much more fun than the northern entrance where all the big tour coaches go!) or WCNP. These are all places where you can get out and explore on foot, as there are no large predators. Have a great trip!

How dare you defend yourself with pepper spray. You might harm some poor innocent mugger.

Hi all!

I'm currently a Geography Honnours student at the University of Stellenbosch and I will be doing a project regarding crimes against tourists within the Table Mountain National Park.

I'm looking for data regarding these crimes from 2004-2010, specifically the LOCATIONS of where the crimes occurred in the park (i.e. Platteklip, Silvermine, Cape Point etc). My aim is to map these crimes using a GIS (Geographic Information System), therefore the locations are crucial to the study.

I will then be able to visually represent these crimes and how they might have been displaced due to stricter security enforcements.

I would really appreciate any data or information regarding this study!

Kind regards,
Kalika

P.S. Richard, I've noticed that you have already done a similar effort with Google Maps. Have you since expanded on this type of representation of crime in the park?
