I have had 4 very interesting sightings of Verreaux eagle Owl while in Kgalagadi, which makes me think of some questions :

our first sighting was late afternoon and we saw 4 of these owl in the same tree !!!(Yes 4 of them). Actually they were not together so we could take photos of only one at a time. But I was very surprised with this sighting, I thought owls were rather solitary birds and did not expect to see that kind of social life. 2 of them we did not see well as the tree was thick but I don't think they were youngs, they looked very mature (in terms of size at least).

I also realized at that time with this kind of bird is often related to sorcerer : their eye is SO dark, it is really unbelievable... I will post some photos in a few days...

the second sighting was only one on a low branch : it had some trouble with digestion, moved left, then right and did not feel well apparently. suddenly it threw up something big, which I identify as a large part of a mouse and looked a lot quieter after that ...

Well... not wrong "wrong" (and I see you found the proper thread)... but they are called Verreaux's Eagle Owl these days.

Here is a nice pic of the Giant Eagle Owl.

We spotted him this week-end at Shimwuni.

Saw this one just outside Mopani - not the best photo as it was still dark! Not common in the Kruger, but apparently does occur in most areas.

Seen on the S21 in June this year.

I would say,Verreauxs Giant Eagle Owl

I would also say Giant Verraux Eagle Owl because of those pink eyelids.

Then I would suppose that this is also a Giant Eagle Owl. This pic was taken very close the Biyamiti weir a few days after i saw the first one.

I would like to know if it is and is it seen fairly regularly?
As you would have already noticed I am very uninformed (I would call it) on bird matters!

We also saw a Verreaux's hunting close to Biyamithi. Probbie the same one as this one in the picture.
