Fellow forumites.

Let's put our collective skills together and put up information on dams that have water all year around.

I'll take the easy ine and kick off.

I have seen Sunset dam at Lower Sabie full in the middle of July as well as in August.
N'semani dam runs lowish during winter but I have not ever seen it empty.

Please add to this for use by others.

Kanniedood Dam near Shingwedzi.
Engelhard Dam near Letaba.
Orpen Dam near Tshokwane.

Kanniedood dam has been empty in April, so anything is possible but it has water most of the time. (I've even seen the Limpopo and Olifants dry)

I would say dams that mostly have water (besides what has been mentioned):

Transport dam
Shitlhave dam
Nyamunda dam
Mingerhout dam
Pioneer dam
and although I suspect it could run dry, I'm yet to find Klopperfontein dry.

I have never seen Mpondo dam Mlodozi dam or Transport dam dry but anything is possible in a drought
Of course the Lower Sabie dam and lake Panic always have water

I have never seen Mlondozi dam near Lower Sabie with water in it. I have only ever seen it dry as a bone.

The wier / dam at Berg en Dal was just a small mud pool in July 2007.

I guess this is one of the drawbacks of visiting the park in the dry season.

Does Ngirivane Dam near Satara ever go dry?

It is currently very low, but still have some water. I've seen it dry once and this winter is another possibility.

I trust you will keep us posted as I'll be there just after you've left and would be curious to know.

Hi Wildthing!

Martie (MJ) (Lower Sabie sightings) showed me pictures on monday. The dam is full!!! :dance:

It filled up with one nights rain!! :mrgreen:

Hi Mads,
That is great news. We saw the dam in August and October and it was so depressing to see absolutely no water. Normally the dam and surrounding area is teeming with game. We will be in LS in just over two weeks so I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I would be interested to know if Leeu Pan has any water in it. Last December until February, it was an absolute birders paradise, but in June it was bone dry.

Sanpfan, it is really hard to tell at this stage. The rainfall season is until April, and the rains came late this year.

A dam like Sunset Dam will still have water in it for sure, but which other dams will have I cannot say. Some might well dry up.

A good thing about going the time of the year that you are is that the water levels have dropped a fair bit by then and the waders are more easily seen, as are animals at the waterholes.

I have been wondering which are perennial Rivers.
I think I read on forum that river near Bateleur dry in winter.
How about Shingwedzi river near Shimuwini?
