This boubou gets up to a lot of mischief during his daily routine. First he tries his luck stealing chicks from the Chinspot Batis then he gets stuck in the chicken cage and I have to rescue him.

Southern Boubou
Laniarius ferrugineus

Differs from the Common Fiscal Shrike because of it's shorter tail, white stripe on wing and habits. Differs from the Tropical & Swamp boubous because of it's rufous flanks, undertail and belly.

Size: 23 cm.
Sexes: Female slightly greyer, rufous wash on breast.
Juvenile: Mottled buff-brown upperparts, barred underparts.
Habitat: Thickets, riverine and forests.
Status: Common & Endemic.
Call: 'Boo-boo', whistled 'whee-ooo'.

Just seen one at Rondevlei Bird Sanctuary this afternoon. On a previous visit to Rondevlei I saw one with a snail in it's beak. It was hitting the snail against the branch of the tree...obviously to break the snail's shell so that he could eat the yummy insides...ugh!!!!

My favorite garden bird, we have had a nesting pair in our garden (Pretoria) for about the last 2 -3 years. Wonderful calls & sightings except when I bring out the camera.

I love these birds - they have such a beautiful and strong call! And they are called out so easily and then keep on sitting near you!

This one sat rigth in front of me -looking me straight in the eye.

And then came down the fence to nearly on my foot - I had to "shoo" it away - thought it would bite my toes!

I saw this bird on the Mahonie loop on 19 October 2008. My first guess is that it's a southern boubou, but I then wondered whether it might be the similar, but paler tropical boubou?

Probably the former, but it never hurts to ask :wink:
