Yay

Thanks for all your info Jakkals and Joel and for clearing up the question about the night drive. I have a few options regarding lighting and will obviously take it easy to and from camp...so easy in fact I may see how slow I can go to draw out the journey

I must say that I've had nothing but excellent response from the camp with my questions and bookings. At my request they've booked us into hut six at Limpopo which apparently has a waterhole in front of it...anyone with any interesting experience of that? Any interesting visitors or photo opportunities?

In January this year the waterhole was dry. I found this unusual because it had rained. Maybe it was not enough to fill it up? If I was staying in the tented camp this is the tent I would try and stay in as well. If my memory serves me correctly they had a lion under the wooden floor of this tent while we were staying in the campsite. Caused a few racing pulses for the occupants when it started roaring! These tents are really nice, it`s just a pity they only sleep two people. The birding is apparently excellent in the tented camp area. We took a drive in to have a look and saw three Barred Owlets sitting in the road as well as Senegal Coucal! I would agree with the comments about photography on the treetop walk. Any bird subjects do tend to be quite far off. I see that the hide itself has been damaged by the floods earlier in the year. We saw a lot of bee eaters from this hide, as well as a few crocs on the banks.

For some strange reason (as Dave mentioned) in February that hole was empty
but last August there were some ellies bathing and hanging around the waterhole the whole night and we also found quite a number of birds there

Yeah, strange about that waterhole...I wonder if it doesn't naturally hold water well and if it's filled articially during the winter then to give the animals somewhere to drink and to keep them from leaving the area

Either way, who needs a waterhole when you've got lions under your stoep

The waterhole near the camp is pumped in winter. Wouldn't have much effect in summer with the Maloutswa and Kalope wetland systems around (oh, and there's some sort of big river in the area as well...)

Thanks for clearing that up Joel. Although now I've got to for some rain in the days before we arrive or I'm going to be staring at a dusty hollow

will have to think about that...

Don't worry too much about that... the trees in camp are full of stunning birds which will definitely keep you busy, and Maloutswa hide is not that far so you can spend a lot of time there

I was just hoping to do a bit of out-of-the-car-wait-and-see-what-turns-up wildlife watching. Nevermind, I'm easily pleased and just uber-excited at having the chance to even go to Mapungubwe
