Nice pic Bahamut,

So would this be a Juv or young bird with the brownish colouring? :?

One thing I have noticed Bahamut, about juveniles, is that they don't get spooked as easily as adults.

This one Elsa, looks a lot like his cousin, the juvenile pale chanting goshawk, found throughout the western half of the country. They are quite common here.

I think this is a juvenile Pale Chanting Goshawk. Am I right?
This one I saw near Pretoriuskop.

Hi Anja. Close enough! I think it's a juv. Dark Chanting Goshawk. The field characters (e.g. less streaked head than PCG) are there, but the mina thing is that DCG are found in Kruger and PCG usually more to the West.

Please help me ID this raptor. It was seen at Pretoriuskop this weekend.
I think it is a Pale Chanting Goshawk because: it's secondary wing feathers seems lighter. And the wing is in contrast with the grey of its neck.

Yes, DCG.

Because of distribution!

Dark colour is also an indication.

The way of distinguishing accurately between the two species is by having a look at the rump. The PCG has a white patch on the rump.

Yolande, your bird definitely is a Dark Chanting Goshawk. As the others have said, distribution is enough to make the call already but the wing coverts would have been noticeably lighter, contrasting with the darker head if it was a Pale Chanter.

These two species are actually surprisingly difficult to ID if not on distribution. I've seen both in the region of overlap on the Botswana border and the ID doesn't exactly jump out at you as I expected.

Like Imberbe said, the rump colour is a dead giveaway but the contrast of the upper wing coverts with the colour of the head and mantle is also a fairly usable feature.

Totally correct, and part of the answer, which you could not know:

This is the photo that I posted 6 years ago on these forums. I never knew what that action would result in...
Almost 6 years as a moderator, married to a forumite....

And I love it!

(Just had to repost the pic!)
