Paulsly Hi and welcome

If you wish to enrich your experience go onto www.primeorigins.co.za and look at the latest guide book released on Kruger. Its " Prime Origins Guide to Exploring Kruger" by Brett Hilton Barber and Proff Lee R Berger.
It includes history, roads, eco zones what animal to be found (with luck) where and has superb illustrations.

Does anyone by any chance have an old map of the Kruger circa1960's or early 70's.
A digital scan or photograph will do.
I am just very interested in those old days in Kruger - I first visited in 1958 when I was just a few years old. Can't remember of course!!!
Can remember the trips in the 60's though with my parents - a lot different then.

I know I have seen some old Kruger maps at my folks place. I think they are 1960's. I will see if I can find them and then scan them, if you could PM me your email address so that I can send it as an attachment.

I have a few oldies that I can look up I do know I have one from about 1948!!!!! but we went on honey moon in 1970 to kruger and I might be able to find that one.
I keep them as its interesting to notice the changes. SO must v'e put them in his "treasure chest" as I cant see them at the moment but I can ask him nicely and we can then scan them and fax them or e-mail to you ..

Maps scanned and e mailed to those who asked for them. The 1941 map still shows Rabelais gate in use and the 1975 map indicates that 40 km's should be adhered to on all roads - a rule I personally believe should be resurrected for tourists and staff alike! Lots of name changes and different spellings as well as Balule being reserved for Non-Whites only!

I have found and scanned two tourist maps One of 1947 and one of 1970.
If any one wants them please Pm me with e-mail details and I will gladly send them on .( they are quite large if you want any detail.) The 1970 one has been marked with our trip we took on our honeymoon !!

1975
The 1975 maps is one of the original tourist maps bought at the gates. Note the Afrikaans language dominates, 40 km speed limit on all roads, the spelling of a lot of the names and the fact that Balule was still only for "Nie-Blanke". The animal numbers also make for interesting reading.

I am prefacing this by saying it may sound like a silly question, but what is the difference between the different coloured routes?
I assume that the thick blue line represents the river, but am wondering about the Thin Blue routes, Thick red route, Thin Green route and the Yellow route.

I found a map from my Kruger days from when my parents were still alive and i used to accompany them to Kruger.

I am trying to find out how old the map is.

The most recent date mentioned is 1971(which was the animal census)

The map does not mention a S100, or Berg n Dal. And it still refers to Punda Maria as Punda Milia.

Animal numbers in the park included.

Roan - 275
Sable - 1030
Ellies - 7900
Lions - 1200-1300
Leopards 900+
Cheetah 200-250

it is shocking to look at the the two antelope species numbers currently, in respect to previous years.

If any one could maybe give me a estimate on how old this map is it would be greatly appreciated as i want to start a album, with pics from way back then.

I was looking in my animals of kruger guide and looked at our sightings(as i was always in charge of that) and noticed in a 4 day trip we saw wild dogs on 3 of the days. I was still very young in those days and wished i had actually mentioned the dates and the area's.
But we learn with age.....

and something else i found while cleaning up

On my first visit to Kruger in 2003 the family booking in ahead of me had a map from 1963, the date they first visited. The staff at the gate were amazed and studied it for ages. If only I knew then what I know now my camera would have been out. Ah well.

Obviously you can buy several in the Park!!

I like the Honeyguide map best. Its much clearer than several others on sale in January.

But its not listed on Amazon when I did a quick search - but several others were.

That's the best one yes, in my eyes.
And I think you can buy it at Kalahari.net?
They deliver overseas at very reasonable prices, good service too.
I would add a few other goodies to keep the shipping cost a low percentage...
Maybe add a bird book like Sasol or Roberts?
Mammals book? Well, a whole library to choose from.
