Besides Kruger the Rusky family has fallen in love with Rusks - especially the Buttersctch and fruit and nut ones from Woolworths.

Wondering if I can get some of you Aussie Saffies to point me in the direction of a place in Melbourne that I can pick these up from.

Pm's okay if this is not moderator approved.

I know there is a South African shop in Sydney that stocks them and I know I've seen SA products in Coles when I was there 3 years ago but I'm not sure about "Oumas" If there is no Saffie shop in Melbourne, I will get the details of the one in Sydney, perhaps they will ship it to you! :D

Rusky, what you need is a good recipe! There's just no Saffie rusks like real good homemade ones. :D

JenB - please pm me a recipe. Or better still put it on the Recipes thread.

Pjw - I have located a shop with Oumas but the Woolworth ones were better (butterscotch and fruit and nut)

Okay, forgive my American ignorance...what is a rusk?? :) It sounds like something that would go well with a nice cup of coffee. :)

Hi Stark

You dunk them in coffee.

They made from self raising flour, sugar, eggs etc. Bake in a loaf pan and when cool, you break the buns up and then put in a warmer drawer for a few hours to dry out.

@Stark. Essentially 'dried out bread' but they are so much more. And stark they come in different flavours - wholegrain for the health nuts, buttermilk, condensed milk and plain. Then there's the gourmet selection - fruit and nut, butterscotch and chocolate chip.....Its 10.30 am here and I feel like some with my cuppa (that's cup of tea/coffee in Oz)

Rusks and a cuppa in Kruger is like Romeo and Juliet.

Hi Rusky, Woolworths have a web site www.woolworths.co.za And they do home deliveries here. Maybe someone there can find a way to ship them to you?

Easiest to compare: dog biscuits!

That's what I call them, you can use them to throw in windows, they are rockhard!

:) Thanks for the laugh DuQues to start my day. :)

Everyone else, thanks as well! The look somewhat similar to a Norwegian cookie my grandmother used to make...and I've learned a long enough soak in coffee makes nearly any pastry edible. :)

HI KDU. Thanks. I've called a store in Melb. It is quite a distance from my house 40k. Theu have Oumas rusks - Nutri, Buttermilk and Wholemeal. I asked about the Woolys rusks and they said they are not allowed to import them :wall:

I said I was willing to pay for a whole container

We haven't got down to baking rusks.......but we will. I'm working on the SO

The theory goes that rusks were "invented" around the time the Northward migrating Afrikaners left the Cape.

The simple reason is that they have an incredibly long "shelf-life", at room temperature!

@RP thanks
@Batmad - we love the BS ones from Woolys too and the fruit and nut ones ain't bad either. Yep, Rusky Jnr mentioned that the 2 of you were emailing each other and he was checking out the Gautend Bat webpage.

SO managed to get some from the Indian deli - Sooji Rusks (sooji=semolina). Quite good. In India they also refer to rusks as "toasts'

Still to make any.....though I noticed SO has purchased buttermilk ......maybe it's my luck week
