Went to Addo today as I hadnt been for nearly 2 weeks and I needed to do some practical Plant ID ....Didnt get too far and got a serious "Lion Fix" instead...Some of the Characters that kept me from my work up on the plains of Carol's Rest
Image

Ardlam's Daughter has really filled out into a beautiful Lioness...she is going to be a BIG mature Lioness...she gave the C Rest Warthogs a rough day!!

Image

Ardlam's Son was more self confident today even in the presence of Macho Bitterbal

The man himself...incomparable Bitterbal

Lovely to see intimate undisturbed scenes of affection from the supreme African predator

Gerrit I have Aubrey the superb Guide from Elephant House to thank as we always stop to chat when we pass and he told me he had seen a lioness there "20 minutes ago"...I went there needing the loo and not expecting to see anything...5 hours later   ..my poor bladder but it was worth all the knaeping!!! :D
Just 2 more then I must get back to my plants...I think Ardlam's cubs are getting big and they stick together a lot and it is my feeling that they will shortly go on their own as mom could be in the family way again...just my hunch so lets see what happens...they certainly showed that they know how to try and get a meal as these pics show

I cant believe how big and confident they have grown in the 2 months since I last saw them.

For fear of getting my facts wrong I will try my best at this...In the main Game Area there are 4 Mature Male Lions, 3 Collared adult lionesses and a young uncollared male and female giving a total of 9. Over the last couple of months there has been lots of mating activity in various permutations by the adult population so there very well could be a new litter born very soon. There are 2 more Male lions that were transferred to a Wilderness Area in N Western Addo a few months ago...the brothers of Gina...total known population that I Know of in the whole Park is therefore 11. The Regional Manager told me that they will shortly be supplementing the population with more lion but in what areas I cant remember so dont want to commit myself. I dont think this has happenned yet as it would be big news with lots of news coverage and SAN Parks communication activity...but exciting times in lion world non the less

I went for my weekly morning in Addo today as I am busy tomorrow ...It really was quiet but it was great to watch this well known lioness interact at the top of the hill. She would spend minutes listening and then gave a full repotoire of her roaring skills sometimes for a full minute then she would listen carefully for a couple more minutes before bellowing out her gutteral roars. I am sure I heard a faint answer but its so hard to establish exactly where it was coming from. I could hear a car coming up behind me and stop and switch off then another and then she stood up turned to face down the other side and ran out of sight ...possibly another lion that had answered her call but not certain of that at all but she looked pleased with what ever she ran at.

WOW Peter

You really take great pics, when my camera grows up I wanna take pics just like you ;-) At the moment got a small al'cheapo, it takes cool pics if i am am sitting within eating distance of the lions but nothing good from a long distance.

Well its just a matter of time before I upgrade, until then the best I can do is this...

Image

Luckily not taken at Addo, if I took it in Addo it would have been the last pic I took with my Canon A400

Some exciting news! Kamkwa has a new cub!

The lioness has been seen with a new cub in Wayne's Valley (near the southern access road) on a couple of occasions by tourists and rangers.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post some photos of the new addition in the next few days.

WOW Megan .. Very exciting news. It would be so great if I get to see them during my visit in a weeks time. Is it only one cub or would there perhaps be more, but she was only seen with the one? Well done to mother Kamkwa   . Wonder how the males will react?

WOW thanx for the great news Megan - I will be sure to look out for them when I am there, hopefully the little one survives until then.

Wonder why there is only one... or is that only one left?

Only the lions will know...

Well its great news and I can't wait to see them.[/quote]

Looks like the lions are loving Carols Rest.

Wouldn't it be a great idea to have a webcam in Carols rest?
Such a pity that will probably never happen. Imagine the great pics we will see, then again imagine the trench from main camp to Carols rest for the fibre.. lol now thats a huge job.

Will cost way to much.

Anyway its not wrong to dream, maybe in the future when mobile cams are easier and cheaper and when Vodacom or MTN finally provide 3G in the park ;-)

This young Lioness is sharp sharp and even as young as she is ....doesnt seem to miss a trick when hunting say in an exposed area like Carol's Rest where there is not the typical Addo Cover to utilise. Here she is skillfully using the back end of my car as cover to get ever closer to 3 grazing Warthog up the hill..sorry very similar to a pic posted awhile ago but found this one which is more catlike in the hunt. If you look carefully at the background ..the lens has picked up the very light rain.
