People always say the Cheetah has Kind Eyes, The Lion has Serious Eyes and the Leopard looks right through you in a very cruel way...I agree but I think the Caracal out does the leopard in the Death Stare Department as this one shows

Peter, as this is a family forumI shall not call you names... The caracal is indeed a special cat. I saw one hunting near Nwanetsi Dam at Letaba. He jumped like a Serval on steroids to catch a dove. They are truly magical cats.

Me and my wife enjoyed a caracal sighting on Sunday 18 May. It crossed the road in front of our car but was much too quick for a photograph. It was seen South on the Tzendze loop (S48) just before it connects to the main Mopani - Letaba road.

This was my 3rd Kruger sighting (had 1 sighting outside of a National Park as well).

How lucky you were!

A caracal is NO 1 on my wishlist - they are truly stunning cats.

I have lost count of my visits to Kruger over maaany years and I have NEVER seen a caracal! Maybe, just maybe my luck will change next month. (Staying at Balule for 6 nights.)

A beauty indeed!

After reading through the "Addo Animals" thread I am definitly aware of the fact that Addo is THE place to spot a caracal (and magnificent lions and kudu's too) but with the current fuel price........

Hey Pikkie! Well I have seen caracal only once and the rest of my family has seen it a further one time... in total two times :D !

1. 5km South of Bangu waterhole on the S90

2. 3km from Olifants on S44

Funnily enough both sightings were made last year:)(2007)

They tend to occur in open grasslands and/or near rocky, mountainous areas. The bangu sighting was in open country whereas the olifants sighting was right in the heart of rocky terrain!

So IMHO the area around Olifants seems to be a good bet. Would also suggest Punda Maria area;berg-en-dal region, H9 to Phalaborwa from Letaba and also Pretoriuskop!

Would like to hear more...

I have been to Kruger about 20 times and never seen a caracal.

If you see one, please tie it to a tree and call me.

They are regularly sighted in Addo, but the only pair I have ever seen was in West Coast NP.

Had one cross the road in front of me just north of Afsaal last year. It was fairly early in the morning, and it walked alongside the road long enough to be sure of the 'diagnosis'.
