Carol...looks like Nossob but lights very harsh and if it is he has distinctive scars on his otherside of his nose hidden...Got a super Caracal there this morning coming up that same hill but right into the climbing sun...thats why I love overcast conditions..I'll post under Addo Animals today

I hadnt seen my ol Mate Nossob for a few weeks. I was on my way home on Friday and just past that little dam on the top of the hill at Addo Heights before it drops to Waynes valley before the gate I saw a Gorah Vehicle stationary on the far hill to the left nearly 1000 m away. The guests and guide were all looking under a bush. After 5 mins scanning I picked up a sleeping Kamqua and Gina about 30 metres from them. I physically could have gone 200 metres and turned left onto the concession strip no entry road that only Gorah can use but I would be in such trouble so I decided to go and leave the high paying tourists on the far hill to themselves. I faced the front and looked right down a well used open game path and 60 metres away walking steadily right at me was Nossob. As he has done a few times before he stopped at my car and sat down for 2 minutes and stared at me and then got up and ambled back from where he came from...amazing...I like to think he came to say hi!!! :D One doesn't see Addo Lions every day so this was such a treat and very special.

According to the lion researcher, Nossob, Bitterbal, Ardlam and her cubs killed a male red hartebeest on the 22 April in the far corner of the Park. Here is a photo of the male and female cub feeding:

and one of a very sleepy Kalahari, taken the next day in the grasslands in the southern side of the game area:

Rushed into Addo this morning to write a test...it was a bright sunny day at 07h15 when I got in and the first animal I picked up in the road barely 500 metres in just as the dust road starts was Gina hunting her favorite prey Warthog...she let me and another car from Mathyolweni with two Brit ladies in join in the hunt as we slowly free wheeled next to her as she smelt the air...stopped to listen and then go into the bush stalking only to return to the road
Image

Then she flopped down and preened herself and pulled a tongue at me before I had to leave as I was running late. She loves chasing cars with their engines off and this time was no exception and gave the ladies a real show behind me as she played cat and mouse with my car crunching forward on the stones of the dirt road. I glanced in my mirror and they were roaring with laughter.

I noticed that Gina had a 6 inch long cut on her chest...nothing serious and little blood and it could have been caused by what seems to be her flavour of the month...Warthog. Here she was just relaxing and cleaning herself up

I mentioned earlier that this lioness had a cut on her chest...This pic clearly shows the thin fresh cut. I'm sure it could be a warthog who fought back that caused it...just my guess :D

The sunlight at Addo for some reason from a photographer point of view is very harsh and only the first 45 mins after sunrise gives acceptable results. I have often come in the South Gate well after sunrise and found that the first 1km is in shade as the sun is obscured by the hill on the right as you go down the hill from the gate and along the bottom towards the first sharp bend to the left into Wayne's Valley. This compared to the light conditions for the rest of road to Spekboom is the best for pics..sunny golden hour light but bright shadowless shade. I have always wished to have a good lion sighting at this point but they have always happened further in. On Monday however I came to the gate with a another car following me from Matholweni Camp. We chatted briefly at the gate and they asked me if they would see lion as the only had Monday in the Park. I said the chances are there but follow me and lets see what happens..Lo and behold this is what greeted us at the bottom of the hill in that lovely light I have just mentioned.

Great shot Alex...this is the same lioness Gina and literally the same place as all my shots above on this page...I was away in Wilderness on Fri 23rd. Was she alone and were you staying at Matholweni Camp? What time of the day was this as I keep detailed records for my edification on these lions...where seen and what time of day etc..so I know which lion it was and where it was ...just need to know what time in this case..Well Done and thanks for sharing ...she is great value this lioness...were you able to stick around with her as she normally does if you switch off and you are the only car...she is very similar to my cat at home and if you stay still her inquisitive nature takes hold and invariably she will plonk herself down next to you (Above Pics) and check you out and then she will literally start preening and get totally relaxed. I dont use my beanbag with her around anymore as she comes right up to the window and I have decided enough is enough and have put temptation out of her way...I and Addo dont need 10 kgs of Beans all over the road   :D
My favorite Gina shot

It was very early in the morning and we were staying in the Addo rest camp and entered the viewing area at 6.30am as it opened. We had also seen her the day before in the same area, but only for a few seconds as she went off into the bush as there were lots of other vehicles there, so on the Friday we went straight there and spotted her walking down the road. Unfortunately the Addo Game Drive vehicle soon also arrived, which was not a problem as the guide knew what he was doing, BUT another vehicle (Honda Ballade with ND Reg) started chasing her to get photo's and she ran off. Wish I had taken a shot of him to post on "the dumb idiots" site.
