A surprise meeting.

Wow, what an unusual pic, don't often see those 2 together, where was this seen Nannie?

On the S41 about 3km from the S90 towards the S100.We first saw 12 or so vultures on the ground - kill ! somewhere,saw a movement and it was the 2 HB scratching here and there,another movement,2 cheetah.They were lying down with full stomachs.The one lifted it's head and watched the HB work their way closer.There was a strong cross wind so the HB only became aware of the cheetahs at the time the photo was taken,you can see the puffed tail.The other badger is a bit to the left.The HB made a hasty retreat.

Saw my first 2 HB in July this year..both on separate occasions. One on the s90 aclose to Mavubye waterhole. The second a day later, halfway between Satara and Olifants, on the H1-4!

Well spotted Anne Marie. Very often in Kalagadi you see these 2 together. About 20 years ago we watched the HB plus a Jackal plus a Wild cat plus a pale Chanting goshawk working together hunting!!! amazing nature isn't it!

What a sighting! That is amazing, any pics for us?

having only stumbled accros this thread now, i recall a similar experience to mgoddard's when a hb in b&d stole our buns and niknaks off the stoep table and feasted to our delight on the grass next to our chalet! unfortunately only no pic.

Also saw a HB on the Sabie River road. We had driven 12.7 km down the road to see a leopard in the tree, so it must have been about 13km down the road we saw the HB on the same morning. Talk about luck...

Honey Badgers are wonderful tenacious aggressive-if-forced creatures. No wonder even the cheetah uses this to protect its young in that they have a thick whitish fur which mimics a HB which they lose as they grow up!
We were lucky to glimpse 1 on S90
Also we have seen the resident HB in Satara camp- he often drops the bins!
Hope to see 1 again- going again 28 May-3 June.

was running around all the time, constantly digging and sniffing with it`s head down
that`s why this is the best pic I could get

but hey, it was my first honey badger!

Great sighting Safrica...they are extremely hard to see outside nightime camp sightings...thanks for sharing

As the vast majority of us know, HBs, outisde of camps, are a rare spot.

My two most memorable are:
1) Orpen camp. About 12/13 years ago. was sitting at the braai, family had gone to bed, pulled up a chair next to the fire having a last beer. as i finished and got up, almost stood on a HB that had creaped up behind me, was about 1m away. Dont know who got the bigger fright!!

2) This year, near lower sabie. strangely enough, was the only vehicle in sight which is a rareity for the LS/Skukuza highway. Had a HB running accross the road foraging on both sides. When i first saw it, it ran to the side of the road just i front of my car, lay on its back and started growling / chattering (hence the name 'ratel' i presume?). Anyway, a car 2000 times bigger than itself didnt disturb him and his quest for breakfast. the sighting lasted 10 mins (only car the whole time, believe it or not). as i took the first pic, my camera battery gave up.

Seen twice in Kruger, both times they were running, I've never even been able to capture their blur on camera
