It truly is a beautiful hide with a lot of potential. We sat there for at least and hour last time. The only irritation is when tourists come who aren't very considerate and talk very LOUD... Those are the people who leave after 5 minutes.

We often go to that hide and in April 2006 during our timeshare week at Ngwenya (4 - 11 April 2008 - cannot wait) there was a beautiful leopard in the tree across the stream from the hide with a kill. His kill dropped out of the tree three times and each time he went to fetch it until he was fed up and just left it on the ground and stalked off. One of our best leopard sightings - totally awesome.

I visited the hide recently ( late Dec ) and was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the hide as I was informed by the honorary ranger at Lower Sabie not to bother going due to the baboon activity. I found no smell, mess etc. and enjoyed a few hours watching mainly the hippo and a few birds. Lovely setting and it was very peaceful and quiet as no other people arrived. By the way, the gravel road past the hide towards CB ( S28 )was exceptional with nice herds of Zebra amongst others.

I was there on Sunday, and we could not enter the hide as several large male baboons showed aggressive behaviour. One even charged at one of the guests and nearly caused havoc.

Yes BH, we visited it twice on our trip 2 weeks ago. There was a large pod of hippos frolicking about in the river close to the hide and nothing much else. A big bull ele gave us a show of superiority nearby though.

It has been repaired and is in a good condition. While baboons do regularly cause a mess there, it is still one of the best hides in the KNP.

There are few hides where you can come so close to hippo. Since the nearby Nhlanganzwani dam has been breached, the hippo population at the hide has increased tremendously.

As for birds, there is always something to see. Also, it is on the S28, to my mind one of the best game viewing roads in the KNP.

One of my favourite areas too! I have (fortunately) never encountered the baboons there - but always had a good visit whenever I stop by. You can tell the area is good for viewing because of the number of safari vehicles that use it! But like any other road, there are times when you see very little....

Yes, hide a seek is the name of the game! I have had the experience of driving up the S28 and seeing "nothing" (in popular language though that is nonsense) and then turning around driving down it again and having spectacular viewing.

When driving up from Crocodile Bridge we often use Nthandanyati as our coffee and rusks stop, and then go up to Mlondozi as our breakfast stop.

We were at this hide late in Feb. There were a lot of hippos there as previously stated, but not much else on the 2 occasions we visited there, But is a beautiful place and have seen a lot there in previous years, including a heron fishing and eating its "dinner"
so the usual "ïn the right place at the right time"statement stands true. Patience is another rule for Game "hunting" .in Kruger

Called there yesterday and it is being totally refurbished
There was chevron (danger) tape across the entrance and the thatchers were busy working.
They appear to have put a toilet just inside the entrance we didn't go in but two other vehicles ignored the tape and went down to the hide

Hippo opposite the hide

Hey. The pics are actually from Dec 2007 , just found them now. But I do have good news, there is water because my cousin just came back confirming that water is present. He saw hippo's too.

Am pretty sure the hippo's came from the Sabie but could have come from as far a field as Makhohlola dam about 10km SouthWest of Ntandanyathi.

Hope there is more water there now than there was in June when this pic was taken.





and no, the Hippo was not dead! fortunately it flicked its ears a couple of times.

Sadly no - its bone dry now Elsa. As are all the pans in the area. Waiting for the summer rains.

Late Sept 2009:

We visited this viewpoint on the S28 on several occasions in December and were very fortunate. The summer rains filled the river bed and the field were lush green. Scenes from our visits:
