I'm sure you still remember Africats thrilling report from that s
pecial night and early morning adventure with this pair of lions.

Image

SO and I stayed in hut Nr.4,AC and Ed in Nr.3.
We didn't get much sleep that night, hearing all those strange
noises,some of them really frightning.
Well,I thaught,as a true angel,I must know, what's going on outside "my door"!!
SO grabbed the cam and I lifted with trembling fingers and mixed feeling of fear and curiosity a small edge from the flap of the door.At this time we didn't realize how close the couple was!
SO did a quick shot - I did a fast jump - guess where? to the
bathroom!In case of.....
Here they come

Image

Image

Now I remember B.B's words,Africa is not for sissies!!How right
he is!
Bye for now,more tomorrow.

Hi Ingrid,
We didn't know who you were at that time, so it's wonderful to hear your impressions of the night and morning. I'm glad to hear you, too, found refuge in the bathroom, as it was quite scary there for awhile. I'm just jealous you were "brave" (naive) enough to peek out the door flap...I tried to, but Ed cashed in one of his "override your opinion chips" (he has 10 lifetime)...I can't wait to read your next installment. Post LOTS of your photos, as you actually had a tripod, while I had .... a rolled up towel. I was somewhat embarrassed to come out when ya'll looked so professional. Did you get a pic of the AWC that night? Hope the rest of your trip was action packed, but maybe a little less so than this episode. Perhaps we will meet again somewhere along our trails and travails.

Africat,Ludwig my SO is not a professionale,he is a beginner
with the digicam. Not to bad yet!He is trying and learning by doing. So do I-with my English-loading pics - telling stories and
using the forum.
So on we go. We have waited for a while, but we didn't hear any strange noises. It seemed that they went to the bush.Lifted a small part from the flap again and SO captured these pics

Wow Ingrid!
That is so awesome being able to see, thanks to you and SO, what was happening outside our tent! We could hear such strange noises at times, so I guess the clawing on that tree right by our outdoor kitchen explains some of it. You can also see them looking in. That black thin "thing" is the braai grill they began chewing on several times. I guess I'm glad I didn't actually open the door flap, but I'm glad you did! Looking forward to your next installment.....

Hello,again!
Sorry,I'm a bit late.I'm a "Slowmotion"
After that short night and scary morning,we couldn't even go outside to the hotplates to make some coffee or breakfast.Nor
could we get into the car.Lions around! :?

Image

Image

Image

Image

Hendrik,the assistent watched the lions carefully.He couldn't
go out to clean hut #3 and 1.He called Nossob, that the next
guests for Grootkolk, could not check in the usual time.
We also had to stay inside. We didn't mind,we had one more
stay in "lionskolk" :D
Time went by,nothing happened and the lions dissapeared in the bush.

Image

Image

Image

Hendrik could do the cleaning up,we could finally get something to eat.
After doing the dishes ,we enjoyed very much, watching the
waterhole!

Image

Image

Image

A relaxed afternoon was over and we waited for the night to
come. 8)

Image

Image

There was no sight of the lions, but thrilling sound of roaring
in a distance! :o
The next morning,a sad by-by to Grootkolk(-Sept.08 )
and off we went to a new place. To Gharagab!!
What does it look like?

Nothing came around in the night when we were at GK, but we did see this fellow less than 1 km away.

Hello,again!
On the way to the 4x4 road to Gharagab(28.o9.07),there was
no game,except this lonely R.Hartebeest,next to Geinab,which
was nearly dry.

Image

It was a new experience to us,travelling a road like this.
You are all on your own,it feels like beeing in the middle of nowhere.

Image

But what a pity,we didn't see anything!
The road to the camp is not bad at all,but the way out is a bit
tricky!
We liked the cabin in Gharagab.

Image

Image

There is also a stunning few to the waterhole from the wooden
deck of the cabin. 8)

Image
Image

It's very quiet, very peaceful but somehow the right place to
fillup energy and spirit!
Image

We had not much sightings(few Oryx),but a beautiful sunset
Image
and one of the most expressive sunrises in KTP.
Image
Image
Image

We left Gharagab to our next station Nossob! :D :P

Hello,again!
The drive back to Nossob was very windy and very dusty. Also
not much game around and no car on the road.
At Bedinkt we spotted a Wildebeestmother and her young.
Image

On the tree this beautiful Tawny Eagle.
Image

Kwang was almost dry,no sights.Further on we saw our first
dustdevil in KTP.
Image

Here you can clearly see, where we met this young fellow.

Image

Also a juv.Bateleur,sitting on a branch,
Image
and this drinking Burchell's Sandgrouse(?),gave us a chance to
take a pic.

Image

Just before we entered Nossob gate ,we saw this Snake Eagle
and a L-B-Roller.
Image Image

We moved in a Chalet, the same as in May 2006!After a rest,we decided to go on a drive again. The sky didn't look friendly at all.Strong wind came up and it was getting darker and darker. At once heavy rain started. We couldn't see a thing,we had to park on the side and wait. After a while,it cleared up and we could go on.First we opened the windows to breath this special smell after rain in the dry KTP.It also showed us the wonderful landscape around Nossob! :D :P

What a pity,we had to go back!Gate-closing time!

Hi,back on the PC.
After packing we left Nossob. It's always sad to leave a place
you like. :(
But looking forward and to know you will be back, makes it a
lot easier.
We started to do the Marie the draai-loop.Here we met these
good looking fellows. It was about 8.oo

Image

Image

Image

Image

We watched them for a while, but no 'action'!On the other side
of the road, behind bushes and high grass,we heard it rustling
and squeaking! :?
Out of the bush, came this lioness with it's pray.Sad,this was
the only sighting of a Bat E.Fox,we had this time.

Image

Image

Image

This lioness, was the mother of the small cubs,AFRICAT mentioned in her report.Pity,we didn't see them.
The lioness disappeared with her kill noiseless further into the
bush.We waited a long time, but she didn't come out again.
We moved on - Direction Greater Duneroad.

Thank you all for the nice comments.I like to read them. :D

Sept.07
As we came to Kaspersdraai,we were surprised,we never had any sightings there. This time a group of young lions were feeding on an Eland.Wasn't nice to look at,but thats also nature.
ImageImage
Image
We didn't stay there for long.
Next waterhole to pass was Cheleka. The place was crowded
with Jackals and Vultures.
ImageImage
White-backed-Vultures
ImageImage
Lapped-face-Vultures and White-backed-Vultures
ImageImage
We watched them for a while and went on to the Picnic place
Dikbaardskolk to have a break.
By for now.

Thank you all for your kind comments!
I will try to do some more today.

After the break,we took the Gr.Duneroad to Urikaruus.We like this road very much.It's a relaxed,slow driving,you can really e
njoy the beautiful Red Dunes and landscape.
Image
Image
Sometimes a nice sighting is crossing your way.Like this beautiful little Steenbok
Image
or Oistrich Image
The road was at this time in a good condition!
At the end of the road, what a surprise,at a distance we saw a
big herd of Eland.
ImageImage
Beautiful, but shy Antelopes! The rushed away as we got closer.
Image
It was just time to check in,in Urikaruus. We were welcomed
by a Hoopoe.
Image
We unpacked, had a rest and off we went to do a little drive.
We visited the old waterhole Urikaruus and Rooibrak.

Hello again!

We had a look at the old waterhole Urikaruus. There were lazy lions on a Dune.
Image

Also these lovely Swallow-tailed-Bee-eaters were sitting on a branch.
ImageImage
Image

At Rooibrak we got a pic of one of my fav.bird.We call it "Red
Tummy"
Image
Two more Sw.-tailed-B.-eater
ImageImage

The weather was getting very unpleasant. We headed back to
Camp Urikaruus. The wind blew to strong to light a fire outside.
Dust was everywhere in the cabin. So we had to close the
"big window" and stay inside.Instead of a braai,we cooked
Spaghetti "Kalahari" Had one or two or more glasses (a
bottle) of delicious SA wine and enjoyed the evening
by candle light.
The next morning was cold, but the wind has stopped. This would be another wonderful day!We packed our things,to move
on to Kalahari Tented Camp.
Just one last look outside to the waterhole. What a surprise!
Cheetah!

ImageImage

The pix aren't really good, but we left happily!

Kalahari T.Camp,is a nice place to sit outside and watch
Image
To get there,we had some waterholes to visit.
At Dertiende Boorgat,we spotted some Teenie-Lions

Image
[ IMG]http://i27.tinypic.com/11vtcg1.jpg[/IMG]
Image

no mum,but father(?)in a distance.
Image
We waited for a while, perhaps mum would appear, but nothing
happened.
We had a coffee break, talked about"what do we eat tonight" (important to SO  )
Therefore we missed the leaving of the Lions! : :?
A bit angry with ourselfes we drove on.Just as we started the
car, about 20 Giraffes came over the dunes.

Image
Image
What a nice sighting this was!Giraffes are such graceful animals. Then we headed to the Camp. Before we reached it,SO had to take a pic of this "I look good " Pale Chant.Goshawk, near Dalkeith.Image
To our surprise a Cape Cobra awaited us.when we arrived at the Camp.
Image
Image
She disappeared quickley in a hole.
We checked in and decided to stay at "home".This time we did
not get a tent with the waterhole in front. We didn't mind at all.
As long as we can be here. After a rest ,we enjoyed sitting at
the veranda having a look, what's going on outside.
(Now,I have a look in my oven, what's going on with my chicken)   .

We sat relaxed at the veranda at KTC and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.
Image
A herd of Springboks came slowly closer.
Image

Here you can see ,how dry and dusty it was .(Sept./Oct.07)
Image

The weather and light changed very quick.(Within 2 hours from
1.to 4.pic).Also the temperature dropped down fast,we couldn't
sit there any longer.SO captured this atmospheric sky before
we moved inside.
Image

After a cold and windy night we left KTC to K.Krankie.
C.Lockhardt greeted us with Giraffes and this handsome Bull.
ImageImage

In the Dalkeith-area the Big Boss was sleeping next to a bush.

Image

This unhappy looking AWC was sitting near Dalkeith Waterhole,
waiting for a prey.No mice?
Image

A quite healthy looking Elandbull walked by at Veert.Boorgat
Image
and Giraffes again
ImageImage Such beautyful eyes
and eyelashes!!
We met these pretty faces at Dert.Boorgat.
Image

A Tawny Eagle,posing like this,is a must, to take a shot.
Image

I'll be back........ :) :P

The drive further on was very, very quiet. No game, no cats, not
even birds. It was a bit spooky!
We thought Montrose would show us the Leopard, like the year before,No,just nothing.
Two Elandbulls at Batulama was"all "to be seen. :P
Image

I think, visitors of KTP know this weaver nest.
Image

Now,we turned into the road to K.Krankie.And there it was.
Image
Another Camp we like.
It was not warm at all and wind came up again.
SO took pix as soon as we moved in.We knew,if the wind gets
stronger, there is no chance to stay outside, due to the dust.
ImageImage
Image Kori Bustard
Image
Herd of Eland
Image

We were lucky we had them all on that early evening.
Finally a wonderful sunset.

Image

What will bring the day tomorrow?
