Thanks Jay!

Back after a special trip.

Rain all the way from Shingwedzi to Phalaborwa today, so nothing to see.

Pics will take a while to process, just a couple of "mik & druks" to start off with.

Pafuri.

Klopperfontein really low!

OK, serious technical problems.

Anyway, entered Phalaborwa on Monday.

Very impressed by new gate, to say the least!
To have two officials offering to process you simultaneously, on a public holiday, is unheard of!

I think the fact that maps, curios and refreshments are out of reception and into the adjacent shop makes a massive difference and is the way to go for all gates!

Quiet up to Mopane, and then a 500+ herd of buffalo at Bowkerskop.

Image

And there the report stops until I've sorted my virtual memory, I think!

Ok, here we go. (Reduced no of pics, but anyway!)

Monday 24 September

Back to the buffalo at Bowkerskop. Funny how such a huge herd can tackle a trough in a relatively orderly fashion.

Image

(My favourite!)

(Saw them approaching again, same spot, on our way out 5 days later, even in drizzle!)

Thanks, Gwen!

So we left the buff and noticed the area to be very dry indeed!

Not much to see, as is often the case on the Mopani-Shingwedzi "slog"!

Noticed a bit of water in the Shingedzi just before Spirivhiri, though, one of the pools half-containing this:

Image

Pretty tough getting a pic,

The carcass looked a day or so old, and there must have been well over 100 vultures, all Cape and white-backed. They were eating, bathing and dust-bathing, all within a small area.

It seems that rangers had removed the tusks and cut open the side, quite standard practice. Still early days, so some vultures were slopping around in the brown contents of the elephants stomach - not the ideal jacuzzi!

A first for me.

Made good time up to Punda, and went for afternoon drive around Mahonie loop.

These 5 customers had apparently killed a buffalo at what remains of Matukwala Dam.

Image

Also a first to see lion around Punda!

Apparently, better pics coming elsewhere of the ellie carcass!

So up early on the morning of the 25th Sept.
A light shower of rain overnight!

Never saw so many animals drinking out of puddles in the tar road! From elephant...

Image

to steenbok!

Image

Both on the "dead" tar road from Punda to the HI-7.
Chilly, indeed, and a total contrast to the heat of the previous day.

Overcast at a dwindling Klopperfontein dam. (There really is NO reservoir there, by the way! (See "tsessebe" thread...)

A little help needed with these two:

Image

This was to be a birding morning, as a saw these for the first time ever, just North of Kloppies!

Image

Image

Then one of a couple of Kori bustard further on.

Image

(We must have seen at least 6 on the trip, two pairs and two singles!)

On to Pafuri!

We saw the same ellie carcass on the Friday. Park staff were removing its tusks when we drove past.

I hear so, DB. To post or not to post!

Anyway, on to Crooks' corner (Pafuri).

Beautiful as always, with the trumpeter hornbills and tropical boubou in attendance.

VERY DISTURBING:

Image

Water Lettuce, or Pistia An alien invader I have not seen here before.

(Not the croc, the water plants!)

Then a very leisurely look at a bull ellie group coming down to drink.

For such bullies, they were shown up!

Full of bravado they stomped down the "beach", to be met with some sleeping crocs. You "had to be there", but as they approached one medium - sized opened its mouth in warning, and the whole gang stopped in shock!

Image

They eventually moved around the croc very respectfully! Strange...
