Unread postby naturelover » Sun Sep 02, 2007 7:46 pm

I have tried reading up on the Silvermine Caves but have found very little. Have all of them been fully explored and either than Devil's pit are any fenced off?

Hi Bush Baptist

Is Devil's pit the cave with the 20ft drop?

Yes NL, it had a 'fence' around the drop and the opening in the ground was some way away and you had to slide inder a rock to get into the pit. Just after descending through the ground, one came to the 'free drinks saloon', a small pool of sweet water!

Not bad memory for 35 years ago hey.

Hi Bush Baptist

Is Boomslang the longest of the silvermine caves or am I mistaken?

Boomslang was the one we always went into because it ran from one side of the mountain to the other. It was the longest I went into. White dome and devil's pit were smaller and you went in and out the same way.

Hi BB
Once when we went through Boomslang Cave a while back. My torch broke.....not a nice experience: not only was it pitch black but I also fell into every stream in the cave. It was quite an experience.

Looks like you and I are the only forumites to have been in the caves, NL.

I always went with quite a group of people, so we had enough torches, but the water in Boomslang often gave us a problem. Also your mother was not impressed with the dirt on your clothes when you got home, but sometimes we swam in the tidal pool before going home.

Hi BB

Sorry for not replying for so long, 2 weeks ago we got ADSL and there was a whole drama with the modem but thats another story

Anyway, I agree I love caving but I would never even think of going into the caves alone not only because of safety reasons but because I dont fancy walking through there alone.
