@ RP: Thanks. At the watering hole.

This was our second sable sighting for that day! Before that day I had never seen sable in the Park and I was beginning to feel like W&H.

@ MM: I was also speechless at the time. The sable bull hearded his cows and young ones to and from the water, and he chased off some zebras that were on their way to the water.

@ BB: Great sighting! :D

W@H, see if you can spot the difference between these antelope, all of which occur in the Kruger, at least, they did in October 2005:

Slide C: Clue - this is not a seperate species

Two nice bulls at Manzimhlope windmill/waterhole a few km south of Nhlanguleni Picnic Spot, around 2004.

(Put them on the "Quizzes" thread as well, don't know if one is allowed to!?)

Sorry W@H!

One of a herd of 12 seen last week at Mondzweni waterhole on the S36. They took over the whol place and the Warthogs, Impala, Giraffe and about 100 Zebra had to stand back for this little group

Hi all! been to KNP since 2002- 7 times.
Have seen sable once only.
Drove 40km in 43 degrees to Modzweni dam, and as I arrived, 7 sable crossed the road! Beautiful sight- well worth the drive!
One Bull and 6 females. I watched them as they went to the watering hole. They chased off the baboons, but were themselves chased off by giraffe! great to have seen them. Heres hoping to see them again- back to my park in May/June! Cheers

Luren..Modzweni dam and that whole road west of the tar road to Tsokwane...ie past Jones dam and the 2 picnic spots along the road to this dam...is IMO the best place to see Sable in Kruger havea look up the page of my pic of a Sable at this very dam..It stands to reason as the Boundary Area of Kruger and Sabi Sands is historically Sable country and Mala Mala for instance means sable Antelope and has one in its corporate badge..Its aweful to think but 50 yrs ago when I was tiny  the owners of farms in sabi sands used to shoot Sable for the pot as Impala were rare and protected in the open Bush plains...since then Impala have bred up and caused gross bush encroachment in S Sands especially and so when Kruger fences were dropped all/most of the sable rushed in to Kruger to the better managed more open veld...but about 8 Black Rhino came the other way to enjoy the thick impala induced bush

I was very fortunate to see this herd, also on the S36 in April. Its interesting to see how many young ones in the herd. Another interesting fact is how they go down on their knees to drink. Do they always do this?

Hi!

On 29 August we saw a male sable approaching the Shimangwaneni Dam on the S36. He was on his own, but there were lions at the dam. Fortunately the lions took no notice of him.....
