Almost never, the best way to sail is with the mast at about 105 degrees (if the horizon is 90).

Nope, we never sail with less than full sails, unless it is really too dangerous.

Here is a sequence of photo's taken by an American tourist, Hal Brindley, whilst in Kruger.

I have known about this for some years now. It was on 50-50 as well. The only reason why I never made it public notice is because mr. Hal Brindley bragged so much about the fact that his girlfriend or wife climbed on top of the roof of the rented car to witness this thing. She dented the roof and they tried to push the roof back so that no-one could notice it. In my books he should actually get the honour of having his name balckmarked somewhere by KNP.

OK, now I'm sticking my head in another hornet's nest.

WTM, forgetting for a moment how they got the video footage, even you have to agree it's damn good. And it still doesn't answer my question under the animal thread. :? I still want to to know why.

It is damn good, I agree. The way it was obtained and bragged about is not good. I actually reported this guy to KNPSM's boss about 2 years ago. He was shocked to read how this wellknown photographer gave other foreign photograpers a bad name. See my answer under the leopard topic.

Not as far as I know ... you get them more on the western regions of SA ... common in the Kalahari Gemsbok Park. Beautiful animals...

The most amazing sighting I think I have experienced occurred at the transport dam on the Napi Road.
Two cheetah cubs were "playing" with a jackal, chasing it backwards and forwards on the far side of the dam. Eventually they cornered it in a bush and they lost interest when it did not emerge from the bush again. The cheetah cubs and mom wondered off, and a leopard appeared on the scene - went straight to the bush where the jackal was hiding and killed it.
This was in 1993, and I did not have a decent camera or video camera at that stage to record the events, but there were 3 other cars there too. Maybe some of them are on the forum???

My gosh - that's the most insane video clip I've ever seen! Even knowing it's 3 years old, I still felt a rush of excitement as I watched it - thanks for posting!

This made me laugh actually "Abigail seems to think this is a good idea. In her frenzy of excitement she jumps on the roof of our rental car, caving in the roof! Oh man! Our adrenaline is pumping" - stupid, but with the amount of adrenalin, and being from overseas, it's actually *almost* understandable!

Cheetah catching a male ostrich in the Kgalagadi
I don’t know if this happens often, but for us this was rather special. We saw this in August 2003 near the Kalahari Tented Camp.
Unfortunately we did not witness the kill itself.

wow that was amazing...thanks sillysally for posting it.... yet i have to agree with WTM... there is no mention that in fact Abigail was breaking the law which he perhaps should have added to deter other tourists who may be coming over...

otherwise a brilliant sighting...lucky devils!!!
